Help us out please -- going from Houston to Smoky Mountains

I was hoping I could get some help. My husband and I (in our 40s) are possibly planning a trip from Houston to the Smoky Mountains the last week of April or early May and would like some helpful information. We have a 36' MH. Do you recommend camping in the Smoky Mountain park area or in a private campground? If you stay in a private campground, are you still pretty close to go see pretty sights, e.g., waterfalls, trails, etc.? How close are the other tourist towns in the area with things to do?
