RE: changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

This is a reply to rob. I understand what you are telling me, as a matter of fact I heard it before. But when I put the dipstick in and retract it then usually the whole bottom part of the stick is covered with tranny fluid and it is hard to figure out. Could not it be as easy as the dipstick on the engine oil. Jerry

RE: changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

Last night when the transmission was kind of cool I filled it up to about half way of the cool part on the dipstick. This morning I checked it again and the fluid was all the way up in the hot part of the dipstick while the temp last night was around 40 so it was really cool. I know this Allison is kind of tricky when filling it. The temp has a lot to do with it but the final measurement should be in the hot section of the dipstick though. Jerry

RE: changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

I think I have one or two more questions for MAPGUY on this transmission fluid change. Once I have changed it for the first time how long do I have to drive my Silverado in order to start the second flush and fill. The reason I am asking is that I do not know how long it will take for the fluid in the transmission converter to mix with the fresh TRANSYND I put in. I drove this afternoon about 15 miles but do not know whether that is enough for the old and new fluid to mix and to start on the second phase of the fluid change. I also think that overfilling the tranny is worse than underfilling is not it? Your response is very much appreciated. Jerry

RE: changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

I am not very mechanically inclined, my training has been in computers so I need people like you to get smarter that I am at this time. Now you said that this TranSynd can be used also in the poer steering right? I just looked at it but that stuff has a completeley differen color. But in case I can use it on my 2002 Silverado 2500HD how do I get the old stuff out though.? Right this very minute I loosened the Allison fluid filter somewhat and it is really coming out. It is kind of hard to see on the dipstick because the stick gets wet from the fluid that sits in that tube. I think I really have to take my time for this job. And by the way I have enough of this TranSynd fluid to get me going for a long time. But since I am such a greenhorn on this stuff I try to absorb all you guys can pass on to me. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted. Jerry

RE: changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

Thanks a lot for all the good info. I printed out the Allison service tip and will read them before I start. Believe it or not but I bought 6 gallons of that TranSynd so I can waste a little. After I have done the first fluid change I plan on driving a good distance and then get ready for the next change. If I have enought fluid left would it hurt to do it three times? Anyway I better get on the ball and start reading all that info on the Allison Service bulletin. Thanks again you guys I'll keep you up on anything that might happen. Jerry

changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

I am thinking of changing the fluid (regular transmission fluid) for the Allison synthetic but.... I do not know how much fluid will come out when I take the plug out. I am sure that a bundle will stay in the converter. But I might have to do this job more than once in order to get as close to all synthetic as possible. Also I wonder whether I should run the truck first and go thru all the gears or just drain it cold turkey. Never did that job before so I am counting on some of you guys with all that know how. I do not even know how many quarts of fluid this Allison thing is holding. Well let's hear it from you guys and I'll go to work. Thanks a lot! Jerry

RE: Removal of differential drain plug on Silverado 2500HD

Thank you guys all your inputs looked OK but I settled for f.wernlein's idea of the little suction pump and it worked great because I just happened to have one. I did not get it all but the majority came out. Kind of a bad spot with the spare mostly in the way. I filled the rear axle with some synthetic oil. As a matter of fact I try to go synthetic on all moving parts. Thanks again for all the good help. Jerry

Removal of differential drain plug on Silverado 2500HD

I decided it is about time to refresh the gear oil on the rear end of my 2500HD Silverado. This differential has a filler plug but also a drain plug. Well my whole Sunday afternoon was shot trying to get this plug out but it is still in there. They must be using some kind of a super glue when they install this plug. I wonder whether any of you smart guys out there succeeded in getting that thing out. I'll be more than happy to try your way. Jerry

RE: Which Allison transmission fluid?

Well thanks guys for all the good info on the Allison tranny flush. I have never seen that many opinions on a subject but the best thing of it all is that they all make good sense. My wife just mentioned to me: Why do not you bring that thing to the dealer and let them do it. I might just do that especially since the truck never saw a Gm dealership again since I purchased it in late 2001. I also need a cooling flush, oil change, fuel filter replacement, differential service, just about everything in the book.Of course I told my DW that this is going to cost her and all she said is: "you cannot take it with you"! Anyway thanks again you guys for all the good info. Jerry

Which Allison transmission fluid?

I am just about ready for a fluid change on my Silverado's Allison tranny. But now comes the thing - which fluid to use. In the past on my other pickups I used Dextron/Mercon fluid. But with this Allison I do not know (remember) which type to use. Here are the specs: 2002 Silverado 2500HD with Allison and 8.1 liter gas engine. A lot of you guys are using this tranny on your 2500HD and your info on what fluid to use is sure appreciated. Jerry

Bolt pattern of the JAYCO 19BH wheels

We are planning on some pretty long trips with our Jayco 19BH this summer and think that an additional spare wheel with tire would not hurt to take along. The tire size of this one is ST205-75-R15 and ours are Goodyear Marathon tires. The wheels are 15 inches and have 5 lugs. We approached several dealers on these wheels item and the very first question is: What is the bolt pattern of your wheels? Well we know it has 5 bolts but do not know the diameter of the bolt circle. It can be 5 - 4.25 or 5 - 4.50 or 5 - 4.75 maybe even more. So at this point we are more frustrated than before and that is where your help might come in. We hope there are some Jayco 19BH owners on the forum that can help us out on this. Just the bolt pattern is what we are concerned about. Thanks for your time. Jerry

short bed or long bed?

When we were looking for a new pickup truck my wife wondered why I am only looking at the trucks with a short box. I told her that short is "IN". Well after some discussions she seems to think that a regular 8 feet box is more efficient and I should leave the 6 1/2 for others. What are you guys thinking? Is the regular 8 feet pickup truck bed more in demand these days? Jerry

location of converter on Jayco 19BH

I think I have to replace the converter on my Jayco 19BH with a replacement. Any of you have done this before and if so where would the location be? My quess is behind the fuse box up front and lower than the stove. Is it a difficult to get to job? Thanks for the help! Jerry

TIVO digital video recorder

Any of you who have a disc on their trailer are familiar with the TIVO unit? I do not know too much about this electronic stuff anymore but supposedly this TIVO records a lot of programs while you are sightseeing and not able to watch TV. This unit comes in series 1, 2 and 3. Any of you out there have any experience with it? Jerry Post moved from TT Forum to Technology Forum Moderator - TT Forum

Thanks for all the replies on that subject. This afternoon I was looking around on eBay and there I saw quite a variety of Generac generators. Maybe some of you would be interested in seeing them. Jerry

GENERAC #5791 ix800 generator

Just noticed on Amazon.com that Generac has portable inverter generators which look very much like the Honada's. The prices on them are very attractive but of course I do not know how well these things work and last. Maybe anybody of you out there have seen them, they are orange colored and look very much like our famous Honda generators. Jerry Post moved from TT forum to Tech Issues Forum Moderator - TT Forum
