RE: Does age of engine really matter?

I think people have been brought up to think more than 5 years old and nearing 100K miles is taboo.
I have seen with my own eye vehicles from the Ford, GM, and Dodge all have 600K plus miles on them ( shuttle vans at Disney ) and my mechanic has a Toyota that is 15 plus years old and 700K miles on it.
What this has done for me is take a serious look at "old" models or high mileage vehicle that most people would ignore.
Worst advice I got from my account when I purchased a large delivery truck when I asked her should I lease or buy - both prices were the same. Her advice, "lease who would want the vehicle after 5 years", well that was in 1995 and that truck is still running today....and it cost me an additional 15K to buy that vehicle from the lease company.
It's Hino made by Toyota and I have only put fuel, filters, tires, and brakes on it. Now I couldn't sell it for much yet it's a work horse.
So if it's in great shape years do not matter, and frankly it seems neither does mileage.

RE: Fuel Additives for diesel engines

Only use it if you want clean injectors, better mileage, and more power.

RE: Roadtrek attempted theft/breakin

I know thousand of people stay at WM parking lots with no problem, but it only takes ONE and I don't ever want to be that ONE.
I will never ever stay any where that is not safe and in my opinion WM parking lots are not safe.
Firt of all none of us know the neighborhood where the WM is, so we all think "oh this is fine it's WM"...well it could be within blocks of the most gang infested area on the planet and we would never know.
Now a day, no thanks, it's not worth saving a few bucks and not stay at a camp ground with many other campers there to watch your back.

RE: Transmission Oil change?

The more you change fluids the better off you are. Changing fluids often is cheap insurance.
I do all my vehicles at 10 to eliminate any contaminates during the build and plus I put in high grade fluids.
On my my new Jeep Wrangler standard shift the shifter shaft would get blazing hot on long trips. I changes to a high grade trans fluid and it was never hot again. So for those that say high grade fluids don't matter - well that was enough proof for me.
On my other vehicles the front end rear end trans all get changed early and often.

RE: is diesel the right choice for me?

One can go back on forth diesel VS Gas and the price of the engine VS the fuel savings etc. etc. but for me it's all about the torque the diesels have.
Ever since I bought my first diesel everything I have purchased since has been diesel. I just love them. I even bought a diesel VW bug, man was that thing powerful, it passed everything on the road, and the mileage I only ever got 12 MPG.
What I love about diesels is once it gets up to speed it seems as if the engine noise disappears.
For mountain driving etc. a diesel is the best choice.
I've seen gas vehicles get 600K miles as well as diesels getting 600k and above, so that would be a draw.

RE: new to Alaska

I would never hit the road with a big MH and not take a Toad.
I did on my first year because I thought it was too much. The second year I took a toad and let me camp and then explore up to 50-75 miles a day. I saw thing I would have never seen without the toad.
All depends, if you just want to drive and camp don't take a toad, if you want to actually see the Country and eat in little dives that have great food - take a toad.

RE: Is this a scam?

Craigslist is good at this, what the poster is doing is collecting valid e-mail addresses. He then sells those e-mail addresses to scammers and they are resold a thousand times.
Never ever answer these posts with a real e-mail always use a throw away e-mail address.

RE: Fuel economy - Sprinter Chassis with Mercedes Benz 3.0L V-6

I purchased a passenger VAN sprinter with that engine so it weighs quite a bit less than the RV version.
Tracked with a scan gauge And double checked my hand calculations at fill ups, I’m right at 17 mpg and can do better and A whole lot worse depending on my driving.
I guarantee it’s not “easily” attainable that’s me being careful.

RE: Need some thoughts

You are asking us what we wanted or needed, the point is what you want or need. No matter what we did it is still up to you to decide. I realize that is not much help, but truth is, you are the one that will live in it. Go look at them, again and again. Good luck.
Wayne
Wayne, yes I agree, BUT the tid bits of info people have been talking about here have given me some insight on how other use their B, even some ideas I never thought about.
So all the back and forth here has been invaluable to me.
Example: The second vehicle thing is a great idea, can’t do that with a C, the trailer idea, brilliant, see these are the reason for my unanswerable question, it broadens my perspective on he “B” vs “c” debate.
In fact these ideas have completely moved me away from even looking at a “C” and more. Looks like the “B” is it.
Conclusion is yes one can get a bigger coach for the same of less money is of no consequence if it sits parked more than it’s driven. I think the people that have “B”’s drive them more often.

RE: Need some thoughts

I keep vacillating between “use” and value. I agree with all of you that the versatility on a “B” is superior. Parking, driving, fuel mileage ( on a diesel sprinter ) etc, but when I look at the 2010 “B”’s at 80-100k and some sale price 2010 C’s at 50-60K it is frustrating given that the “C” has two to three times the space of the “B”.
I guess it is coming down to my needs, and yes my needs lean towards the “B” but the tightwad in me leans towards the value of the C’s, even if they were the exact same money, simply because of that extra room.

Need some thoughts

As I’m looking at the priced of Class B’s and Class C’s they are price about the same maybe a bit higher.
When you have purchased your “B” did you also go through the confusion of “ if I’m going to spend that much money why not get the bigger “C”.....or did you decide “yes it’s the same money as a “C” but I can use it as a daily driver plus it’s smaller and I could get more use out of it”
That’s where I’m at today. For the money you can get a bigger coach, so I’m going back and forth.
So any insight that you may have on why you went to a “B” might help me think of something I didn’t.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Buying RV "Factory Direct" Phoenix Cruiser

Second the Navion/View comment, if you are set on a Sprinter model. Just remember, you can get a Ford or Chevy serviced anywhere. The Sprinter, not very many, and soon to become even less so. but it's all a trade off for what you want.
Actually since Mercedes dealers are now going to handle sprinters you will have a good selection of dealers to handle your service.
I purchased an 07 Sprinter and it's the best vehicle I have owned and trust me I've owned dozens. Traded a GMC 3500 dually for it and love the diesel and mileage I get.
I've got nearly 50K miles on it and only put in fuel, oil, and filters.

RE: Would you want to know?

Sure I would want to know, so I could wear that good suit, have that great meal, drink that fine wine, visit that great place, buy that thing I've always wanted, and do anything else I never did because I was always going to "go it later" or when I saved up enough for it.

RE: B's are really too cramped,

Yep. You hit it right on the nail! We love our B! We use It much more than our neighbors do their large rigs. We take more trips - long & short.
What I found out even though I had the Bigfoot class C with a huge garage I was always overwhelmed with outfitting it for any quickie week end trips. So here we had the best class c and it stayed home while we jumped in the car and took off and stayed in a hotel. That's something we never figured on with the Class C. Never figured on all the start up and shut down time.
Same story with the truck camper, going through all the lifting it up, backing up the truck JUST RIGHT so it fit and on and on grrrrrr.
Ya, I don't know what model we're going to end up with but I want something I can just turn the key and go and not worry about it being too big to go where we want it to go.
I must be getting too old for all the logistics and mucking around with a large RV.
I'll put up with less room for less hassle.
