RE: Front Wheel Drive VS All Wheel Drive

Mike - I'm in Henrietta.
OK, so we've had a relatively mild winter here. But the three family vehicles are all AWD / 4WD - my Envoy, DD's hand me down Subaru, and DW's Venza. DD had two Saturns previously and they were helpless in the snow. And after DW had the Subaru she said she could never go back to FWD.

RE: accumulator tank or expansion tank?

I found a NIB 2 gallon tank on Ebay and mounted it next to the water heater.

RE: My official hate GMC thread!

Well let's see - 1200 complaints to NHSTA on Chevy Cobalts that lose the power steering electric boost. Out of 900,000 cars that's over a 1% complaint rate but the government bashes Toyota and protects GM.
62,000 miles on my Envoy. I replaced both wheel bearings, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat, transmission (ouch!) and heater blower resistor on my dime. That doesn't count the stack of warranty paperwork I have.
It's an '04 - 3/36 warranty on the drivetrain. GM said "sorry Charlie - out of warranty" on the transmission.

RE: Wheel Chocks For Jayco?

I made a set similar to Gaffer222's but used 1/2" all-thread rod. The blocks are 4"X4" cut from a pallet skid. There are 3 nuts per side - 2 are run down permanantly to hold one block in place and the 3rd is for tightening them between the wheels. So I have to carry a 3/8" ratchet and deep-well 3/4" socket - no big deal.

RE: changing out outside steps possible?

I went from 1 to 2 steps on our HTT. I got a step unit the same width as the one I had, cut the old one off with an angle ginder and cutoff wheel, and welded the new one on. Hindsight says if I had left a bit more stock on the old unit it would have been a bolt-up operation.

RE: type wheel bearing grease

I use Valvoline GM-spec grease. It's on Dexter's approved list and I can get it both in tubs for repacking bearings and tubes for reloading the grease gun and giving the bearings a shot during the season. Go for the synthetic or moly if you want, but does it really make a difference if you repack them every year?

RE: Toyota Problems

CNN reports there have been 80+ complaints of Corolla steering problems.
There have been over 1300 complaints on Chevy Cobalt steering problems but this isn't reported.
DW & I have had her Toyota Venza a year and it's been back to the dealer ZERO times for warranty work. Compare that to my GM I bought new in '04 and the stack of warranty tickets on it. And the fact that I had the transmission rebuilt at 62,000 miles. GM's answer? "Sorry, 3/36 warranty for that year."

RE: trailblazer fuses

Yes, there is a way to unlock the transfer case and get into free-wheeling mode. This lets you tow 4-down since the transmission output shaft isn't being turned. If nobody here can help try the TrailVoy forum.

RE: Burb w/3.42s

Look at the build sticker on the inside of the glovebox door. Find the code with "G" in it, post it here, and somebody will get you the gear ratio.

RE: Tell me it's not so...

Non-residents can't possess a handgun in NY state, loaded or not. NY doesn't recognize a Utah permit.
And when traveling, I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

RE: 12 volt parasite draws

After you get the ammeter wired in the circuit you can also pull fuses in the power panel and see if the draw goes down or disappears. The LP detector is hard wired but may have it's own fuse. The keep-alive memory in the radio is another draw. And the fridge on LP also uses power.
I put a disconnect switch on the battery & don't worry about parasitic draws.

A few years back I found a Schumacher 2/10/30 amp smart charger with 75 amp boost. $40 at Wally World. For my single G27 it's fine.

RE: Favorite Upgrade or Enhancement

Replaced the bathroon faucet with a residential one.
Replaced the single entry step with a 2-step unit (DW's vertically challenged.)
Moved the dinette table pedistals 1" out so the window blinds can fall behind the table and not on it.
Added a few extra AC power outlets.
Made a stovetop cover to gain some counter space.
Added a 2-gallon accumulator tank to the water system.

RE: Trailblazer towing

I tow a Starcraft 21SSO with my Envoy. If you go longer than 23' or so it becomes a matter of the tail wagging the dog with the TB's short wheelbase.
I use a Reese DC hitch, Prodigy controller, and a transmission cooler on mine.

RE: Wheel Bearing on 1500HD

My Envoy uses a similar bearing. The first one went at 45,000 miles, the second one at 55,000. Once I learned the first one the second one took an hour.

RE: Strike Any-Where Matches

I have a couple of boxes of the Diamond brand. I'm told one of the reasons stores don't carry them is because of the extra hazmat transportation fees.
I remember as a kid at my grandparents house seeing Ohio Blue Tip matches by the wood stove.

I had one of the cheap brass regulators that didn't flow worth a darn. I replaced it with an adjustable Watts regulator with a gauge - problem solved.
