RE: Is it possible to sell...

You can do whatever you wish but the simple is answer is NO IT CANNOT be legally sold in Mexico. Period. I dont care if you have an FM2 or 10 lawyers it is illegal. If that vehicle is sold and it is involved in an accident or a crime a search of the VIN will show that it has a 10 year permit in the name of the American seller. He would then be responsible for the accident and likely sent to prison!! Bad idea. If he wants to take it to the border and cancel the permit it can be sold IN THE USA. If the unit is less than 10 years old a Mexican may not import it to Mexico.Transactions such as this do take place illegaly and the end result is the Mexican Government makes more stringent rules for the temporary permits that we all carry.

RE: How's the poor guy in Mazatlan doing? The RV'er?

RV'rs are not a special group of people. They are tourists and YES tourists have been attacked. Why do we have this constant nonsense comparing one country's crime to Canada? Why are some so concerned with their own ability to find an RV park yet ignore the safety of traveling. I might be old school but the prime responsibility of a husband /father is to provide a safe environment for his family. A thinking person would do his research before going to a strange or new area. In today's world that research would include forums such as this, web sites of his own country, newspapers, travel guides and perhaps picking the brains of other travelers. With that information he should make his own decision based on that information. There is no need for us to convince anyone. If a traveler does not feel safe in Mexico he should look fr another destination. If a traveler thinks that the safety issue is overblown then he should take his dream trip to Mexico. Whether Canada has more murders than Mexico should not enter into the equation. The person who asked about RV'rs who have been attacked no longer frequents this forum but it seems like he has been reincarnated. Safety is a personal issue and other than stating facts we should not be twisting anyone's arm!!Statistics of crime elsewhere in the world have no meaning in these discussions If a newbie were to listen to some of these posters then Disneyland would be less safe than Iraq!! It is incumbent on those of us who do travel Mexico to tell the truth and not jump on those regulars who do provide useful information. The nonsense should be saved for their blogs!! But certainly the posters who monitor this forum to simply create havoc and have never been to Mexico should "get a life".

New car permit rates

I believe these rates went into effect last week:
Car permit $35.52 USD
Car permit via internet $53.00 USD
Car permit at Consualte $44.00USD
You must have a passport to obtain a car permit. I have not seen anything about the price of a 10 year permit.

RE: Living and working in Mexico

mexicorus:
I am going to completely disagree with you. You live in Penasco a tourist resort. How can you compare that idyllic life you describe with any border town, Michoacan, Durango, Chihuahua and Sinaloa? Almost like a completely different country. So no matter how you feel in Penasco it has nothing to do with the discussions on safety in this forum. Mexico is changing rapidly and safety has become a serious issue. Your post could serve to give potential Mexico travellers a false feeling of security. Penasco would certainly be a good destination for first timers wanting to taste a little of Mexico in a safe environment.

I usually do not pay much attention to these warnings. I sense that this one is a little stronger and includes cities like Monterrey.

RE: Observations from our First Mexico Visit

Orion:
My post was mot meant to be elitist. Poor people in Mexico cannot usually afford good food. I see people eating Tacos beside the bus depot in Oaxaca that not even the brave on this forum would eat. But they are only 3 pesos each. The janitor in the trailer park might be a fine fellow but with his 150 pesos a day( or less) I don't think he could recommend a good restaurant. Has nothing to do with eating with any class of people. I have eaten in cardboard houses with roosters running around on the dirt floor and enjoyed myself. As some on this forum will attest we have many Mexican friends who are very poor. I could care less about their " class". Your sarcasm is not appreciated and misplaced.

RE: Went to the Tiffin factory

Where did that oster get the information that Tiffin has orders for 500 units?? Seems very high in this market. We went through the Tiffin factory and were not impessed. They have the best tour guide in the business and an all around great guy.. Quality control is no better than other factories we have toured. I saw workers doing all kinds of things that were incorrect and sloppy. But there is no question that Tiffin will make it right after the fact. I doubt Tiffin's come off the line with less defects than any other product. One should never use a factory tour as the deciding factor in a MH purchase. Go to a dealer and examine the product carefully. Tours are a selling tool.

RE: What food can I cross back into US with?

I believe that liqour limits vary according to State. Arizona is either 3 or 6 beers per person. We have brought dairy back with no problems: Yoghurt, LaLa milk, cheese and more.

RE: ALCAN-Canada & Firearms-Gravel Pits

I sure hope the posters here do not think that they can drive across Canada with a loaded handgun. Or worse yet "carry" that ridiculous pistol. The last thing we need in Cadada are a bunch of pistol packing dudes. On the other hand it would be nice if the rules were not so hard on those who are hunting and want to bring those weapons. 2 different issues.

RE: Caravaning in Mexico

The Escapees group would be great for any first timer. This is not some overpriced commercial caravan. They are fabulous people who help the locals wherever they go. Next year's caravan is the East Coast. You will not be sorry if you try Mexico with a fine bunch of folks!

RE: Observations from our First Mexico Visit

oyveyz mir
Ya maybe a little grumpy!! But those comments by that poster are about as accurate as saying to always eat where the truckers stop. Some truckers do know good places but they also eat in some greasy spoons. We often will ask for a recommendation from locals. But not the janitor in a hotel or a velador. Ask a middle class person . You will often get some good advice for anything from a good hot dog cart to a 5 star bistro. We often eat where tourists do not.

RE: Observations from our First Mexico Visit

The comment about eating where Mexicans eat does not make much sense. This is Mexico and over 95 % of the people in the country are of course Mexicans. So you could be eating anywhere and that is where the Mexicans eat. That would include fly infested stands with no running water and fancy restaurants where the menu starts at $35 a plate. Why would the locals know about clean restaurants? I can take you to some crowded places where the slop is not fit for pigs. I can also take you to a small restaurant that is not only clean but serves great food. As for eating where the police Chief eats: In today's Mexico you could end up in someones cross hairs!

RE: Sonora Tourism Office new hotline 078

If that # is for Sonora tourism dont count on them answering the phone after normal hours. I wonder if it rings to a dispatch office for the Angels?
I just called that #. It has nothing to do with Sonora. That # is for all of Mexico and they are supposed to answer 24 hours a day. They do not dispatch anywhere other than a highway. If you are in a trailer park and need help you are out of luck. I also do not know how you dial that # from a foreign cell. I always recommend that one carry a Telmex phone card. You can get a 50 peso card. Then you can call in an emergency.

RE: Anyone cross into Mexico since March 1?

rocmoc:
Anyone who calls himself "Mexico anything" is not to be trusted. This guy is ful of himself and I would not trust any of his info. Yes you are supposed to turn in your FMT. I would bet that more than 50% do not. Until recent times they did not keep track of the permits. There will be no fines and never have been! BUT that will change in May when they become FMM. So relax and have a Sol.

RE: Anyone cross into Mexico since March 1?

rocmoc:
Kino is not a free zone. It is called "hassle free" and only applies to vehicles. Yes Kino is free for vehicles but NOT for people. Two totally different Federal Dept's. One is Immigration and the other is controlled by the Hacienda ( like IRS). Do not get Sonora Only confused with a Federal car permit. Again these are different. AFAIK the Federal car import is still done at KM 21. Being as you don't need a car permit until Empalme it seems they have decided to move the SONORA ONLY to Empalme. Sonora is trying to have the so called free zone extended to Estacion Don. This would allow you to go to Alamos and other areas without vehicle permits. To make matters even more confusing immigration permits are changing along with the rules. Still not much info available. Starts in May.

RE: Overnighting between Celestino and San Carlos

THere is a nice Pemex just south of Mochis. Dont know if that is the one where you encounterd a lot of noise. There are some smaller Pemex's North of Mochis as well. Some are very tight. DO not stay at the Wal Mart in Obregon. We had our compartment doors jimmied and they stole some very expensive tools. The cops are useless. Did not even get me a report. According to one of these bums robberies at this location are common. There is a trailer park in Mochis that is fine for overnight stops. We are rethinking Pemex's as overnite stops due to the increase in petty theft all over Mexico. However some of the Pemex's do have special areas with a velador. Forget Wal Marts!! I see units at the Wal Mart in Hermosillo and this is one of the worst areas in Herm. for break ins and car theft. Last year one person had their toad stolen at this Wal Mart. Lots of thefts from cars during the day. Has to be worse at night.

RE: Flat towing 2009/10 king ranch

Jason:
I spoke with Remco and here is what the tech stated: He has been with Remco for 17 years and this is the first he has ever heard of a problem. He also said that the F150 is their MOST popular kit and if there was a problem they would have heard of this long ago. I don't have a truck to physically check the axle mechanism. The Remco tech said to just put it in 2wd and disconnect the shaft. Makes sense. I still don't understand that quote that I found. If vacuum applies to both sides of the motor there must be some sort of valve to release one side so the other can activate. I would imagine there are check valves to retain the vacuum. Without more information I think it is a non issue. Perhaps some Ford owners that tow an F150 will chime in.

RE: Anyone cross into Mexico since March 1?

Rocmoc:
Your info is correct. If over 3 days but less tham 7 days you still need the FMT but it is no charge. Over 7 days and you must pay the fees. I never heard of it being optional?? The paaposrt requirement is so new I have zero information. However anything past km21 is considered the interior ( as opposed to the Fronterra). You mean you do not have a passport??
