RE: Hi Load Capacity Aluminum Wheel

Ask any of the (multi) HORSE trailer mfgrs (or a dealer) what brand of wheels they use. Serious weight - and most use Aluminum wheels. Not sure - but think it will be Alcoa. ~

RE: Denman files chapter 7

Chrisdug - if you haven't done so already . . . . Use one of the many internet sites to compare tire sizes (a "new" size against what you have now). They will show the results in inches - width, diameter. Maybe one will work & clear - maybe not. If not - - on to plan B. ~

RE: Tire stress

Without "lock & load" on an ST vs LT tire discussion - for the OP: 1. Unless your tires came off the rim & deflated - you're probably good to go. 2. As others have said the suspension is supposed to be able to handle it. However - - if at all possible, avoid making really tight turns - and "scrubbing" the tires. If you're on a grass or dirt (not paved) surface, the tires don't adhere as well - which is good. Your tires (no matter what type or brand) and suspension will appreciate it. :W Once saw a guy toss a hand full of sand under his trailer tires just before he made a really tight turn on pavement - kinda like "dusting" a dance floor. ~ JC

RE: Known overweight failures

Very interesting thread. If you ask the MDT guys they say that you'll wear out a pickup every 60,000 miles pulling heavy 5ers. Yet all the trailer delivery companies use pickup trucks. Hmmm... something not right here. BTW: you can't make an F150 into an F550, but the only difference between an F250 and an F350 dually (3-4,000 pounds difference in GVWR) is springs, rear differential, tires and a few miscellaneous things. Generally the frame, brakes, engine, transmission, radiator and driveshaft are all the same. It wouldn't take many parts to upgrade an F250 to near F350 dually GVWR. :h :h Interesting thread - - and even more interesting comments! "Trailer delivery companies": They all use pickups! Baloney - or should I say "Balogna"! "Companies" hire individuals. They furnish their own vehicles. *If* "many" use pickups - it's to avoid truck scales/fees. Some use MDT's if they want to deliver large/r trailers. And, yes they *do* wear out a lot of pickups from delivering heavy trailers. The 60 thousand miles is usually closer to 100K - and they are considered "worn out" when the warranty expires! Common sense & economics. Silly us - "we" never knew the difference between an F-250 and and F-350 was simply suspension components! :S Why do you continue to beat that to death? Plenty of reasons to purchase a *factory* F-350 over a "modified to F-350 specs" F-250 . . . . besides the suspension components. (As has been indicated often here). Sounds like you are justifying your "upgraded to spec" truck. Supposed statistics and gee whiz stuff aren't the answer. Just say "IMO" or I am happy with doing it my (your) way. Whatever rings *your* chimes - and . . .that's cool. :C ~ JC

RE: I am new the RV scene, so please help.

My wife and I want to purchase a rv and start camping. I currently have a 2007 Chevrolet 1500. A friend of mine says that a fifth wheel is so much better. But I have 1/2 ton truck. He says no problem. So, my question is, do you think that I can pull a fifth wheel (even a small one) with a 1/2 ton truck? Thanks. Seems everyone here wants you to have a fifth wheel. (Tough to find something that will work - and chances are, you will be too heavy for your truck). Why risk getting in "over your head" - if you're not sure if "camping" is for you? I would suggest a used Travel Trailer, about 22-24 ft. A much better "combo" with your 1/2T truck. Then if you like camping, you can move up to something else, whether that "something" is a 5th wheel and different Tow Vehicle, or a Motor Home. (I have a 5th wheel - but towed lots of TT's with 1/2 Ton pickups and vans.) ~

RE: Tires, Tires, Tires

I am also looking to replace my Marathons (ST235/80 R16) but nobody else makes this tire size. Is there any reason the Michelin XPS RIB LT225/75 R16 wouldn't be an acceptable substitute? Use the tire sizing charts available on the internet to compare diameter & width in inches. Replacing the GY Marathons 235/80 R16 with XPS 235/85 R16 would "gain" an inch in diameter. I felt that put the two (tandem) tires too close to each other. Others felt it isn't a problem - for me that only left 1 1/2 inches between the two tires. Easy solution was XPS 245/75 R16. Same load capacity (as the 235/85). Same diameter as the GY Marathons. Gained an inch in width (1/2 inch per side). Check clearance (inside of tire to trailer). Also - check *wheel* pressure ratings. Usually stamped on rear (backside) of wheel. Marathons are 65 psi. Most of the E's are 80 psi. Lastly - there are other quality (LT) tires (less expensive) mfg by Michelin. ~

RE: Fifth Wheel or Travel Trailer

To be fair, I hope you are asking the same question in the travel trailer forums. You will probably get exact opposite answers than given here in the fifth wheel forums but either way will have some more opinions to ponder. For the record, I have owned both TT and fivers. Two new members - (welcome) For the OP - *IF* you ask the same question in the TT forum, change the wording - duplicate posts are not allowed. I also have had TTs from '1975 until 2006 - slide in camper, 2 MHs. WHY didn't I go to a 5th sooner? "Back when" (with TTs) I carried two-wheel toys in the pick-up. No "quality" toy haulers then - and they usually were TT's anyway. Now - *if* you need to take toys with you, a toy hauler is an easy solution. IMO - - the 5th wins JC

Just email PullRite & ask them. They have great customer service. Compliments on a brilliant solution! Ask the people that really know - for SURE ! Q. Why didn't he think of that!! A. "We" know way more than the manufacturer. :C ~

RE: Travel on west coast

My intention is to travel through L.A.San Diego and San Francisco. I would like to know of campgrounds,in those cities, from which one can use public transportation/tour operators. My aim is minimize/ eliminate driving in city trafic. Thanks in advance. Lived in Los Angeles and Orange Counties all my 68 years. Assuming you have a "toad" or a pickup tow-vehicle, IMO - you should reconsider your transportation choices. Any of the "touristy" things to do, are *not* difficult to access with your own vehicle. Los Angeles "and vicinity": You are looking at *LONG* hours on public transportation in L.A. from outlying areas. So, drive in to the area you wish to see - and/or then take your tour, or? IMO - I wouldn't consider Long Beach or Huntington Beach (Bolsa Chica) location "convenient" for Los Angeles ("touristy" things) . . . by *public* transportation. Spaces at State Campgrounds at the Beaches are reserved 6 months in advance. Campground in Malibu = either Pacific Coast Hwy (101) -or via the San Fernando Valley) to go to L.A - - terrible commute, no public transportation. Bad option! For the Los Angeles area, I would suggest campgrounds north of the San Fernando Valley - for multi-freeway access to Los Angeles. ~ Attractions in Orange County (between SD & LA) use campgrounds in Central OC - Disneyland area, or (less expensive) off the 91 fwy by Yorba Linda. You didn't say when you are taking your trip, but Beach camping (like Bola Chica parking lots) are not available in the summer. ~ San Diego: Several campgrounds in the (or close to) the San Diego metro area *are* convenient to the S.D. attractions, and again - not difficult to use your own vehicle. (easiest of the three cities). ~ I've never lived in San Fran - but have done all the touristy things (many times) with my personal vehicles - never had any problems.

RE: Using a slide when its in ?

:h Something is missing here. OP, what's stopping you? Wonder the same - maybe more info needed. Me2 seemed to be very, very informed about trailer and TV braking on another thread of his. So, surprised at the question! IMO - if you can "fit" for what you want to do, why not? Or - as others seem to think - are you worried about the extra weight on the slide when it's "in"? ~

RE: Why not put the Toyota in neutral?

"Nailed to the wall" from 2008 crash: "Gross vehicular manslaughter without alcohol impairment AND reckless driving". Took place in the adjoining (L.A.) county to the above incidents. Guess Toyota was going to let the driver "take the rap". See - "Look of Terror" ~

RE: Why not put the Toyota in neutral?

THIS GUY needs to be nailed-to-the-wall. In Sikes, Toyota has a live survivor who has legal representation - but had not filed suit. So, none of: "we can't talk abut it due to pending litigation". Maybe his claim *is* bogus, maybe not. ~ BUT - - WHY didn't Toyota (parent company of Lexus) take the media opportunity to say anything -SOMETHING- pertaining to the CHP Officer and his 3 family members who were killed in the "stuck accelerator" crash of the DEALER OWNED Lexus . . in the Same County?? Cell-phone call by his BIL while accelerating out of control. Experienced, professional driver (CHP training is extensive). Pending litigation? Or could it be that they have no way to explain the incident - and wouldn't want to ruin a chance for a (positive) "press opportunity"? So . . . . .Why not nail that guy to the wall ???????? (Toyota could claim it was a suicide) ~ Of course there's the woman in So. CA driving a Lexus well before the stuck accelerator problems came to light - who DID get "nailed to the wall" !! Her out of control Lexus killed her sister in law riding in the vehicle. The L.A. DA filed manslaughter charges against her (prior to the incident she had a perfect driving record). Can of worms, Mr. Toyoda! ~ JC

RE: Best Exhaust brake

John - Two suggestions - post some more info in your question (Vehicle & year, auto or manual) - and you might be better off posting your question in the Tow Vehicles Forum. You might want to visit the forums (not on RV Net) that are specific to the brand of truck you own - and see what the owners have to say. Also try a search - here and there, LOL! ~

RE: Sudden acceleration issue with new 2011 F350 Diesel!

I went to my Ford dealer today, the owner had promised to let me know when he got his 2011 F-350 6.7, and it came in Friday night...just for him! A Lariat. Nice! I own currently 2 F250's with the 6.0 engines, and love the feel of the power on those trucks, so with 90,000 miles on each truck, so I'm not a stranger to the modern diesel's performance! I just have got to talk to the DW later and convince her that a new truck is in our immediate future! I't not my fault...I'm in love! http://www.cool-smileys.com/images/146.gif Maybe you can entice the dealer friend to take his new truck for a pass or two at the strip in Fontana - for some times! (Would make a good sales pitch!) And . . . .maybe you'll want to hang on to one or both of those F-250's until you relocate to some other state! Ya gotta tell the viewers on the forum/s what the tax bite in CA is "for falling in love" !! :E Of course - maybe it's just re-investing your bucks in CalPERS :C ~

RE: Braking: TV or trailer ? How fast can you stop ?

Its interesting to read posts on this forum and see people stating that their TV handles the trailer really well, except for stopping. And if you read further, or in between the lines, you find that the tow vehicle is close to or within its GVWR. This all brings up an interesting question... which entity should provide the braking power for the trailer, the truck or the trailer ? It seems to me that RVers have gotten used to pulling trailers with feeble (at best) brakes. They thus expect that the tow vehicle should be responsible for stopping the entire combination, less whatever braking power they get from the feeble brakes. This is in sharp contrast to the trucking world. There trailers have enough braking power to stop themselves. As a matter of fact, truckers pulling someone else's trailers get accused of using the trailer brakes to stop the truck and trailer. When a truck (with a hitched weight of 50K pounds) has a gross combination weight of 100 to 200K as may be the case with certain load/trailer(s), the trailer(s) MUST be able to stop themselves. In my mind there are a lot of really unsafe 5th wheel combinations out there even though they are within the door sticker on their truck because their trailer has poor brakes. Honestly, how fast can you stop your combination in a panic situation and what percentage of that is coming from the trailer ? Would your trailer have enough braking power to stop it and the truck ? As far as I am concerned, that should be the standard, not the other way around. For the record, my old trailer has terrible brakes. I am putting disk brakes on my new trailer. ~ Rather than say, "I have (know) the correct or best answer" - Take the same question over to the Escapees HDT forum. Plenty of folks that: 1. Tow very heavy trailers. 2. Former and current OTR drivers - fleet mechanics, owners, etc. as well as ordinary "believers". 3. Engineers on that forum - including a hitch designer. 4. Major builder of "horse haulers" using MDTs & HDTs. Stopping is *real* important with a trailer full of horses! 5. Many can truly speak from experience from one or more of the above areas -and- also many have owned (and towed with) all the truck types (LDT, MDT, HDT). Great source of *friendly* info! ~ JC

RE: Tires, Tires, Tires

I believe that Marathons are now being made in the USA. If yours are I would keep them and see how they fair. You may have the last of the china bombs though. Then maybe there's "homeland" IEDs too!? My '06 10K 31 ft 5th came with load range D Marathons - Made in the USA. Probably did about 6K miles - before I saw things I didn't like. My choice was to replace them (Michelin XPS Ribs - LT - E). IMO - other good replacement choices out there (besides the ribs). But . . .What was right for me - may not be right for you. Keep reading the tire threads (search feature). It's up to you to decide. ~
