RE: Thousand Trails and its "Openness for non members"

We have been TT members for at least 20+ years. They used to bill themselves as "family camping" and it was. You always felt it was a safe place for your family, can't say that anymore. the system has been going downhill for the last several years, particularly the last three. They keep slicing the pie and selling something new to generate $ plus raising dues every year. But you never see improvements to benefit "campers" and no maintenance done to facilities. You can only guess where all the money goes.
I can only speak for the western parks but they are falling into serious disrepair. We spend about 180 days in their system every year full timing so we visit alot of parks per year and generally the same ones every year. With each visit, more nonworking electrical pedestals, more spaces taken away to place cabins, more junk vehicles stored on the property, more graffiti, late nite drinking party's, the list goes on. You just never know who you are parked next to anymore. I cannot see how they can expect to sell new memberships. And in fact, they are catering more to overniters in the cabins and rental trailers.
With every stay I complete the online Comments questionnaire and only once received a reply - that to a dangerous electrical condition at Verde Valley. We have taken the first steps to reducing our use of the TT system as it is just not what we bargained for some many years ago. I talk to many people that feel the same. Just my two cents and maybe other "membership" parks are becoming the same way.
I agree with the above. We have been members over 25 years and for the most part have been very pleased with TT until the last several years. The policy of selling camp sites for 180 days to members really suck !!!! That takes that site completely away from TT Members even if the person who bought/rented the site may not show up to use the site for weeks at a time. I used to tell anyone who would listen that TT was a great Camping Membership to get into. I am not so eager to promote them now. But I still use them about 150 days/nights a year
as I have unlimited usage

RE: Fifth Wheel or Travel Trailer

I have owned both, in fact I still have a 40 ft 5th w set up on a perm site. I prefer the TT over the 5th w as there are less steps to climb. Set up properly the TT will tow as well as a 5th w. I have no sway whatsoever towing a 34 ft TT.
They are both easy to park but I see more people struggle trying to park a 5th w
I really have to have the use of my p/up bed. I know the 5th w has more storage but most are probably overloaded but so are TT.

RE: Can I pull TT with my 1/2 Ton

I towed a 26ft TT for several years with a new Chevy 1/2 ton BUT at 32,000
I had to have the A/T transmission replaced. That's when I went to a 3/4 ton
Ford.

I would get the bubble at least half way in the level indicator. I have replaced at least 5 ref over the years so I would rather be safe than sorry

RE: Thousand Trails Opening to Non-Members?

This is as bad as the policy TT has now selling camping sites for 180 days out of the year. Completely takes away the camp sites from TT members. I thank it is BS and I have been a member over 25 years. I can honestly say in MHO TT is definitely going downhill. I am sure glad my dues are frozen at $275 a year for unlimited usage
Hopefully you do not stay more than 10 days a year or you will close them down. :)
We stay in TT Parks about 150 days/nights a year and I dont understand your comment

RE: Friction Sway Control

I tow a 34 ft TT with one sway bar. No problems with the sway bar or the EZ Lift
hitch. I have a Dual Cam that came with one of my TT but I found that the EZ Lift is just as well for me.

RE: Winter Home Prep

I have several Houses in Yuma {4 Rentals and the House we live in} so it is a job securing them for the HOT summer months. I use Styrofoam 3/4 to one inch thick cut to fit over all the windows and sliding doors. I use wide clear plastic tape on the edges to protect against crumbling. Place the styrofoam between blinds or curtains and the glass. Mark each Styrofoam location with a felt tip pen to simplify this next year. When taking the protectors down in the spring seal in a large plastic bag Do not use foil reflectant if the windows are tinted. I also fill the large plastic bags with water and cover all drains, sinks, shower, tubs etc, Pour pink RV antifreeze down all drains including the toilets. Cover bowl with Saran Wrap. If you have a garbage disposal or dishwasher pour a small amount of antifreeze down the unit. Turn on for a split second then off. This protects the and seals the gaskets. Fill several one gallon milk or water containers with water. Make sure and leave the tops off. Leave in each room. More water is not necessary as it will dissipate too fast, releasing more humidy than needed. I shut off all water. Shut off all elect at the power meter and circuit box. I place a cup of coffee {not perked} in the refrig. and freezer with the doors open.I place a small amount of bay leaves in all cupboards to keep the bugs etc out. DO NOT LEAVE ANY AEROSOL CANS,WINE. BEER. or POP Cans as they will explode. Been there done that. I do not drain the water heater as air will get in the element if you do. I give the tanks a good flushing when I get back. I set off bug bombs under the units, in the in the storage rooms, kitchen, and Arizona rooms. I set a 1 by 4 board cut to fit in the patio door so it will not slide open. If you have gas appliances , make sure the gas is turned off and the gas valve outside is off. Notify the Sheriff
Dept that you will be gone and they will put you on there list for drive bys.
This is the way that I secure the Houses here in Yuma for the last 10 years. So far so good If you have neighbors who live here in Yuma year around , ask them to keep an eye on your place and leave them a phone number where you can be reached in case of emergency

RE: new vs used

I could never see buying new as I would rather see some one else take that big depreciation hit. There are so many good deals on used RVs at this time due to the economy. But I have always believed in buying Rvs, Cars, TV used but not abused. Never bought a lemon in over 50 years of buying used

RE: Membership Resales: NOT what it seems.......

We joined TT over 25 years ago by buying a membership from a private party for less than $2,000 { $1,700 or so} Later I upgraded for another $1,900 or so.
My dues are frozen at $275 a year. I can stay 14 days then move to another TT Park for another 14 days etc etc. I can stay in TT Parks every day of the year if I wished for the $275 a year dues. We only use about 150 day since we spend the winter in Yuma in our House. It has really worked out great for us. I am sure its not for every one as you have to use it and like the TT Parks. We especially like the Parks in Oregon and Wash. { Pacific City Oregon and La Conner Wa are our fav}

RE: Woodson Bridge SRA, near Chico, California

If it is the same Woodson Bridge Park that we stayed in {twice} it has full hookups right next to the River. Some shade trees which you will need in the summer time. Used to be a Mobil Home Park years ago {the one we stayed at}

I would get the 3500. I had a 3000 and it struggled to raise my 34 ft TT.
The 3500 Atwood that I now have lifts it with ease

RE: METAL CARPORT ADVICE

I had a Company named COVER ALL in Northern Cal deliver the metal carport etc and my Sons helped me put it up. 40 ft long, 12 ft wide. Should have gone 14 ft wide. About $1,000 for the parts. This was about 18 years ago. Later I had the same Company put up a 30 ft by 12 ft for a smaller RV for about $1,400
Really happy with both

RE: Good Sam ERS renewal Misinformation

I signed up for Coach Net for a discount if I signed up for three years. It was much cheaper than Good Sam Platinum that I had. I had Good Sam for many years
and had good service for most of the years but the last several years it was harder and harder to get good service. Left me stranded for hours on the Freeway one to many times
Effective January of '08, AGI/CW/GS switched their ERS provider contract to Road America, an "independent assistance company". Does that pretty much coincide with when the service went downhill for you?
YES
