We are considering using American Express as our "back-up" credit card while travelling in Mexico. Could some of you experienced Mexico travellers advise us if it is readily accepted there. What about Diner's Club?

AmEx is accepted in most high-end places, but as elsewhere Visa and MC are more widely accepted. NO credit cards are accepted at Pemex stations or most grocery stores.

wolfe 10: You are incorrect. Wal Mart grocery stores, Ley's, Costco and Sam,s all take credit cards. Many of the newer Pemex,s also take credit cards. Why bother posting wrong info?

Wolfe ws 90% correct in his response. Also Scottie stated they were thinking of using AMEX in Mexico. Would be better off using Visa and MC. Also moisheh, Sams club takes "Discover Card" not Visa/MC/Amex.

Itoham: Sorry if I seemed harsh. However your post is incorrect as well. Sam's Club in Mexico takes Visa and maybe Mastercard. You were thinking of Sam.s in USA .I know there are other large supermercados that take Visa and M card, but I dont know all their names. I would think that almost all of the very large chains accept cards.

Here in Monterrey my Amex is accepted at Gigante, Soriana and HEB stores as well as Sams and Costco. Debit cards are accepted at most businesses, it is worth using instead of carrying cash. Also, you can find American Express offices in major cities. And this is good info. too!!!!

Hi qtla: Are they accepting American debit cards or strictly Mexican. I cannot picture them being part af the USA system. Something about International banking regs.

I don't use my U.S. debit card often, but when I have, I have never had any problems. Where I have problems is in the U.S. with my Mexican debit card from Banorte. It works in ATMs but not stores like Walmart, etc. Wierd! I haven't asked my bank yet what the problem is. Will have to do that.
