does anyone know where I can get horsepower rateings at the wheels My new 2004 truck cant keep up with my old 5.3 litre but GM says ther is nothing wrong and I want to get a private dyno done. it also uses 24litres per 100 kms or under 10 miles to the gallon empty. Is this normal

I'm not sure about the HP rating, but a friend at work gets MPG around 10 in town and 14 highway. We have discussions about how our trucks have never met a gas station they didn't like!! He too, sold his 94 Chevy 350 and bought a GMC 6.0L Crew Cab 4x4. Other than the gas mileage and truck payments, he seems happy with his.

Well Mr. Upset....I think your truck is probably running ok. I have the Chevy 1500 HD with the 6.0, and it also gets poor mileage. Around town, I get 13 mpg, and towing 6500 lbs I get 10-11 mpg. I have a fiberglass cap on the back, and I use a wing on top of the cap when towing. I have to watch the rpm's closely in hilly terrain, otherwise speed drops off quickly. In retrospect, I should have spent the extra and got the duramax. I would have never guess that GM "over rated" the towing capacity so much.

GMC or Chevrolet Silverado HD2500/3500 series
6.0 L
300 hp @ 4400 rpm
• 360 lb-ft torque @ 4000 rpm
• Fuel efficiency — 13 city, 17 highway
• Standard on Crew Cab® models.

My personal feeling here is if you want to tow with the HD series GM trucks you only have two engines to choose from, the 8.1L w/ the Allison 1K or the venerable 6.6L Duramax/Allison combination.
Just my personal opinion.

If you are comparing the performance based how quick the 6.0 is versus the 5.3, the 5.3 is faster and feels faster. It has a 4L60 transmission which doesn't rob as much power as 4L80 transmission that is mated to the 6.0. The 5.3 gets a higher percentage of its horspower to the rearwheel than the 6.0. Gas mileage has always been a complaint with most people that have a 6.0. That's why I got a truck with 8.1L. Didn't need that much capacity but the mileage isn't much worse and Allison trans is a real bonus with grade braking.

Not apples to apples. Approx 7K lb GVWR vs approx 8K-9K GVWR vehicle.

Bigger frame, bigger tranny, bigger diff, bigger suspension, etc. Exact same body though.

With more weight to carry, the higher parasitice loads from the various larger components, the engine has a bit more loading to carry.

So thinking a smaller V8 is zippier is out of context, as it's running a smaller/lighter load.

See more 6.0L trucks get less MPG towing than my 7.4L big block. Means it's working harder, as smaller V8 consuming more fuel per mile say so.

Can be mitigated a bit by slowing down. Can't help when it comes to towing heavy. Bigger is better in this regard, IMHO.

Why did you get a bigger truck? Assume the load was too much for the smaller and/or you upgraded to bigger TT/load.

Is that 10 mpg on the highway or in the city? Either way, it's way low. I have a 2003 1500HD CC and, if I soft peddle it, I can push 20 mpg on the highway (usually around 17 or so). I haven't spent a lot of time driving in the city, so I'm not sure how well I do there.

It sounds like you have a brake hanging up or something. The only easy way I know of testing that is to drive for a while and after parking, hold the back of your hand up to the holes in the wheels. Do not stick your fingers in there!! If one wheel has more heat coming from it than the others, you have probably found the culprit.

On edit: One other thing I would do is to take it to another dealer. I found Western (184th St & Stony Plain Rd) to be very good.

I had the 2500HD, a 2000 GMC, and my economy was fair. I could nurse 17 out of mine if she was really babied. But with our 32 foot 5ver, we needed more truck so we traded for the 8.1.....WHAT A TRUCK. But it sure does love gas stations. Now, ours was the extended cab and was running a 3.73.....

I had an 02 crew with the 6000 and it too got about 280 miles to a tank.( 25 gal.) I got rid of it and got me an 04 D/A and WOW what a diff. about 400 miles to a tank ( same 25 gal. )

Best so far is 19mpg but it still needs to be broke in.
