My Suburban get 17 solo highway, 9 in town solo, and 10.5 average pulling trailer on the highway. The 6.0L engine is rated higher in hp and torque than the pre Vortec 454. It will outpull my old 454, get twice the gas mileage, and never runs hot. I think we all agree the 8.1L is a better puller, but give the little guy a break.

400 km to the tank after 5000 km. Sounds about the same as yours, upset gm owner.
As for speed / power, it beats the******out of my f-150 4.6.
edit - it seems that the auto-censors don't like a certain 4 letter word that starts with c and stands for poop.

I have the truck in the sig below. 13.5 in the first 7K of ownership empty driving. I have to say you guys getting (claiming) 17-20 mpg with this engine raised my eyes. I don't see how that is possible.
Just sold RV. In the market for something new.

Mine is 1996 7.4L/4.1's and "occasionally" get 15.4 mpg, pure highway. Often enough to claim, but not often enough to say regularly.
Have seen the old 5.7L 1500's get +20 mpg on regular basis, so not out of the question.
Nothing absolute, as all 6.0L's get bad MPG. Many on both sides of good MPG to poor MGP.

I have the identical truck to you (even the same color) and I can get over 620 km (about 370 miles) to a tank. That works out to an average of about 15 mpg. Since a lot of that is city driving, 17 - 20 on the highway sounds about right.
Now, when my wife drives it, the numbers change dramatically

I get so tired of hearing about the 6.0 versus the 8.1 I almost can't stand it. You must understand that one is a small block and one is a big block. The small block has lots of power and if you need more, buy the big one. I have a 6.0 and am pleased with it and for now, don't want a diesel or to hear about how good the diesel is. I know that but didn't have the money or justification to buy one. If you need the constant power of the big block, buy one. I upgraded from the 5.3 to the 6.0 to get heavier components, bigger brakes, a trans. cooler, a trans. gauge, and a better safety margin than a 1/2 ton.
I could have lived with the 1/2 ton but decided not to. I think a lot of GM users have the choice for a medium duty engine which the 6.0 is and what FORD offers not to use as an option.
Sure you can buy a bigger motor and if you need one, do it. I think the 2500HD with the 6.0 offers a middle of the road engine/truck combo which suits many trailer owners that don't want the constant thirst of a big block or the high price tag of a diesel.
GM cured the piston slap in the 6.0 and gave us a pretty good tranny.
The 1500HD does have some problems for some reason with heat and a larger thirst than that of the 2500HD. Why, ....I don't know or understand.
We do have a choice as GM buyers to have a mid-range truck whick Ford or Dodge potential buyer don't have. If you don't like 'em.......don't buy 'em.
Thanks for letting me gas on.
