I went with Lance for two main reasons.

1. We liked the floor plan of the 921.

2. Most importantly, Lance is the only camper distributor anywhere close (3 hours away) to us. Sure helps to decide when you can actually get over to see the camper in person.

There are good and bad to all campers, and if you ask any 5 people you will get 5 different answers, so look around and go with what make you happy.

We bought an artic fox because the WHOLE side slid out freeing up a lot of floor space inside. Also, they had the highest capacity for fresh and waste water tanks. We loved it once we were parked and inside the camper. Also, I could sit up in bed without bumping my head. Otherwise, I felt I was sleeping in a coffin if I can't fully sit up. We sold the Artic Fox because driving with it was terrible. We had a 3/4 ton truck with a 9.5 foot camper and were WAY overloaded. It was very top heavy and a lot higher than a Lance. We had to have a 2-step step stool to get to the ladder to enter the camper. I might add that our truck was also high. We have a 4 wheel drive which raises the truck and also the air bags raise it up. The salesman said that once the camper is set onto the truck, it would lower the truck a bit. That proved not to be true since we had to inflate the airbags which raised back up again. Going around the simplest curves made us feel like we were tipping over. We decided that we would either have to upgrade to a one ton and hope the problem would go away or just sell it and buy something else. We now have a Class A. Karel

Quote:

Host: Floor is 18" tall , over 12' exterior. VERY heavy; Each slide is 390lbs more than their specs. Priced outrageously!

Lance: only 1.5" walls. Still making switch from wood frame to aluminum. They will say the one they want you to buy is better.

Arctic Fox: Center of gravity is way far back behind axle. Very heavy! Very expensive. Anticipating lawsuits because they have too many problems with the big campers. No support under belly; tanks fall out the bottom of camper. Can't use with full tanks off the truck. Finally switching to aluminum frame in the near future but unitl then, they'll sell you on wood.

Eagle Cap!!! The most bang for your buck!

Amen to that I just bought a new Eagle Cap 800. 2inch walls with R-11 insulation R-17 in the roof (NW Edition)- aluminum frame- fully supported and heated tanks - standards stuff that are options on other campers..

Many will disagree, but some friends think two cheap campers over a period of time would be better than one expensive one. After having had two pricey ones, I think I agree with them. They've been using a cheapy for around 15-17 years and are still using it. Our expensive one is a piece of****. We're spending some money on it to make it better because that's less money than trying to sell it and get another. My signature will show that it's 4 years old.

I'd love to join in recommending Eagle Cap because they are great campers, but I doubt you could get it in Kentucky. I'd probably go either Lance or Alpenlite if either is in your area.

Where did you get your info? The spec sheet says the slide adds 250 lbs. The entry steps to the camper are much more user friendly than Bigfoot or any other basement camper we looked at. I talked to the Host owner before I ordered mine about use of the camper off the truck and he said no problem. I understand all the current production campers are aluminmum framed and much lighter than the older production wooden ones. I have a 9.5 on order and with the options I orderd will weigh about 3100 lbs with the double slide.
outrageously priced??? Isn't everything. I just ordered a truck that cost more than I paid for my house---30 years ago. I shopped hard, looked at every camper I could find to look at and the HOST is competitive with any of the others with similar features.

Hi
How about Alpenlite ? far superior construction to the Lance, aluminium frame fiberglass exterior with gelcoat finish, solid surface countertops , real high end! Take a look and see that there are other "Quality" units out there!

I did some research on almost ALL campers on the market. And belive me, the best bang for your buck is an Eagle Cap.

The statement about Arctic Fox Center of gravity is not exactly true! I have the Arctic Fox A990 on my truck and the center of gravity is in front of the rear wheels, and in the middle of the trucks recomended window for center of gravity.

My recomendations is look at them all, check out the features and by the one you like and can afford, all the major brands will give you good service.
