Some very good information JohhnyT. Should be very helpful for first time buyers.
One thing I think should be added is the negotiation process. Depreciation is bad enough but can be horrendous for those that paid too much.
That 25% discount, or close to it is very important when buying new. Buyers must know that there is a lot of markup in the MSRP pricing of motorhomes.
If someone is looking at a used MH buyers should be aware of NADA and that their prices are a little high.

Johnny T:
In a recent post, I asked the question: "Do you have a game plan when you set out to buy a motor home?" Your piece gives us all of the reasons as to why you NEED a game plan.
I am afraid that many of us motor home buyers just step up to the plate, without considering the many factors that JT points out here. As he says, its is no surprise that the outcome of some purchases is indeed not always a "happy ending"!
You can't do to much "homework" when you step onto this playing field!
Very well done!

Thanks for the comments and suggested changes...I think the comments relative to doing the deal in terms of negotiations are spot on...While I doubt that any cook book approach will work, the more insight one can gain about the going discount rates the better... The savings potential are significant... There have been a goodly number of threads on that topic... But it would be helpful to condense them into netted form..

As exspected Johnny T has given us good information again. Even though I agree with trying to get it right the first time. Don't beat yourself up if you didn't bat a 100% on your first RV. Using all the input this forum has to offer; looking at endless rvs etc; etc. There will that one or two things that just are not right. You'll more than likly have to go to bat again to get that homerun.

Very good info for the first time MH buyer. I agree the MH has to fit the buyers needs. Also a lot of us have posted our own experiences when buying a MH. Some good some bad. And its these post that help all of us when buying a new or used MH. I saved almost 25% of list price on my new MH. I think New MH buyers should be aware, excpecialy with no trade involved. This post helped me when I went out and looked at new MH. Good JoB Johnny T.

Very Good JohnnyT!!
After reading that, I guess my old "seat of my pants", "off the cuff", "spur of the moment", "but I want it" impulsive spending habits just won't seem as fun anymore.

Your post is just wonderful. I am a first time buyer, going from nothing to a Class A Motorhome, and although I can not say I used all of your steps and certainly not in the order you have them, I can say I followed many of them and must add I still have no regrets after five months. We have been out three times and would be out this weekend but a recent surgery prevents that. In discussion with a friend of mine I can still only find one item which I am not completely pleased with and that is the Leveling Jack system. It has individual controls for the rear jacks but not for the front jacks the fronts go down together. Other wise the Bounder 32W we bought has been and continues to be a dream for us and I trust it will be so for many years to come.

Great Job, Johnny T... allthough we did not have a writen plan, and I can see the advantage of having one like this, We had long discussions about what we wanted to spend, things that we wanted on the coach, and of course, thinks that we needed, still we made some compromises about we ended up with. In addition to my written plan, I would recommend that you take a pencil and note pad with you, write down what you like and what you don't like about what you see in units you look at. Little things that bother you now can become a real pain in the neck latter, and have you saying "Why did I buy something that works like this" Check those notes again and again, be sure you are happy! We didn't get it right the first time, did better the second, Looking forward to the third, I will not be afraid! (don't tell the boss)
