I found a great deal on the following truck and have some questions.

2002 Ford F-350 4x4 Srw Reg.Cab
Powerstroke with Automatic Trans.
43,000 miles and fully loaded

1. How reliable and durable is the transmission? This truck will be towing a 9,000 lb. trailer anywhere from 50 to 100 miles a day 6 days a week and plowing snow in the winter.
2. Is there a 100,000 mile factory warranty on the powertrain?
3. How does the powerstroke 2002 compare in performance to the diesels of 2004 and is the maintenance similar?
4. What is the expected mpg. loaded and unloaded?

The local GM dealer took this in on trade and will sell it off there books to me for $18,000. It looks brand new. I am not to familar with the ford superduty's so any input on the truck is appreciated.

1)The 4R100 is as good as any automatic tranny out there. Auto will never match manuals in durability, but if you don't overheat it, it should do what you want. Tranny temp gauge (other than the factory one) is a must. If you abuse the tranny it will break, but that's also true for Dodge and GM.

2)100K warranty is for engine only

3)The 04's have the 6.0 L PSD that is all together different. The 7.3 is a time tested platform. The 6.0 is a little more poweful, but is still fairly new. The 02 and 03 7.3 had all the advancements put into the 7.3 over the years.

4) Mileage: I get 14-15 in mixed city/hiway. 12 towing. Best hiway mileage is about 19.

Sounds like a great deal. The only down side I see is the regular cab. The best resale is for crew cabs. Otherwise sounds like a great buy. Should be able to do all you want and more. Make sure truck has the snow plow package or you could void the warranty. We don't get enough snow to plow here, so can't give you too much help there.

If the transmission has been regularly serviced every 30,000 miles it may last 100k to 120k miles. Not as long if not. Ford auto trans behind the diesel is known as a biodegradable. As for milage I drive 55 mph & get 20mpg. But I have the manual trans. Two weeks ago I drove from Calif to Ohio doing 65-75 on cruise control & averaged 22mpg. Coming home with my new 12,000 lb trailer I averaged 11 mpg. Just my $00.02, -Rich

PS. I just looked at the price & that is a great price on a 2002. Like any used car purchase, check everything out. -Rich

I wouldn't trust the tranny pulling that often.
There is no comparison between the new 6.0L and 7.3L. The 6.0 is a MUCH more powerful motor, stock for stock.

I pull a 33.8 TT to Colorado and Az. No problems in two years. I suggest a triple lock torque convertor for your tranny. Also a set of gauges to watch you temps.etc.
Good luck and enjoy trailering.

Do not waste your time or anybody elses, GRAB THAT TRUCK FAST. That is an awesome deal. Just follow the advice you have seen here. Get gauges and a larger tranny cooler, flush all the fluids (if the Dealer hasn't already ask them too in the deal) and love a long lasting durable truck!!! The 7.3 is bullet proof, and so is the tranny if you take care of it.

Well after reading all the responses, I bought the truck and picked it up Thursday night. Yesterday I had new tires put on it and installed a brake controller and had the brakes inspected. I had every fluid in the truck changed front to back except engine coolant. Tuesday this truck will go to work and we will see how it does. I will leave 8.1l reg. cab at home, that truck has been real good to me but here in NW Indiana Gas is $2.10 and diesel is $1.55. So there will be some fuel savings. This is my first diesel pick-up truck and must admit that I am looking forward to it. I was always happy with the performance of gas motors but my trailers keep getting heavier and with fuel prices the way they are and direction there heading this truck will be nice to have. My 8.1L is not for sale though.

Zappo, Congrats on your truck purchase. You will be happy with the PSD's performance. One last piece of advice, Read the owner's manual including the diesel supplement & follow the required service schedule. And at every oil change put a bottle of Prestone Coolant Additive in the radiator. This prevent the dreaded cavation in the engine block saving your cylinder sleeves. -Rich
