The engines will go forever but how about everything else?
I have Been looking at a lot of threads concerning 3/4 ton diesels and payload load and GCVW. Looking at a new chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 CC only. A gasser can pull 12,300lb and the diesel 13600lb for a 5er but wait... what’s the payload on a gasser, its 3000lbs and a diesel is 2300lbs. This is all sticker weights and some go beyond that... I think realistically it only pays to buy a diesel dually these days including all the environmental BS that is put on diesels which plummets the gas mileage of the past.
Don't get me wrong, I think Diesel's are awesome but it is a question of what they are combined with.

Gas - diesel all of it boils down to what you are going to be doing; weekender, full-time RV, size of rig, etc.

Last year we bought a Rockwell 8319SS. which comes in around 7,800 loaded. Learned right away that while Rockwell may say they are "Half-ton towable" they didn't say just how well a half ton could tow it.
The truck however is a lease, so come July 2010 we turn in the keys and drive away in a different truck. Which one is the question.
Given the 260+ replies in this gas-diesel debate, and then the debate about 3/4 ton vs 1 ton, then of course which make. Should take me until Jul 2010 to sort things out. And by then, who know whick companies will still be afloat.

I've heard of these new truck, even seen a couple. It would help if they had dealers in these parts. Nearest Toyauto dealer is about 300 kms away. Pretty scarce in rural Canada.

fortkentdad,
When this thread was started some 5 yrs ago...... plus or minus.......gas motors were a bit shy of the HP/torque they have now. Diesel was IMHP probably a better option. Go back even a decade more, and diesel was just coming into play with turbos, beating out the gas motors big time!
Today, it is a******shoot as to which will work best. The SB motors like the TOyota, the GM 6.0 etal, have power specs on par with BB motors when I started buying new rigs in 81. SB 350 or equal motors had less than 200 HP, and barely 300 lb ft of torque, if they even were in the mid 200 lbft range. One could by a 300 CI I6 gas with 105-120 HP in a 1 ton dually, with a GCWR less than its GVWR! Things have changed a bit
Depending upon how much you drive, a gas may in reality be the better motor cost wise. I would have no issues buying one of the new GM 6.0 gas motors with the 6sp auto behind it, and pull what I pull with my DA combo, which is upwards of 26-27K lbs total including trailer! My 2000 vortec 350, has been upwards of 19K lbs total, with a manufactures GCWR of 13500, pulled just fine! 45-50 up a 2-3% grade. Better than BB motors of yore!
You will be fine

Since you appear unhappy with the .5ton hemi I think it's pretty obvious the extra torque of a 2500 or 1 ton diesel is in your future. I just moved from an 02 2500hd diesel to an 09 and the 1-2mpg difference is well worth the extra hp/torque -clean and quiet pulling the longest and steepest grades. FWIW diesel is 88c/liter here, gas $1.09. Yes the gas motors are up in power from several years ago- so are the diesels. The gassers still scream up big grades at speed (they make those power numbers at high rpm)unless crawling. My dmax purrs low rpm up the coquahalla snow sheds and connector at speed limit. Fan rarely kicks in. Bliss for me and the family. The truck is quiet when arriving at cg late or leaving early , doesn't stink out the nieghbours and is like a luxury car to tour the area we are staying in. I tow a 10,000lb 5th. Test drive a new diesel - mountain tow monsters that are very civilized touring empty and cg friendly.

Diesels by their nature are low rpm motors
