Thought I would try and start a thread for those of us that purchased a slide-in and pull a horse trailer to go horse camping. We decided to go the truck camper route in lieu of a horse trailer with living quarters. That way we can also use the rig to go boat camping and the like. We live in the central Texas area and have horse camped in KY, AR,OK, and TX. We normally go to places that have hookups but recently purchased a generator so we can go to more horse camps.
Would like to hear from those in the same boat. Discuss our rigs, share ideas and places to camp. You can see by my signature the set-up that I have. We plan to be moving to the western Washington area in about 3 years. I noticed lots of horse camps in WA and Or but very few with hook-ups. Would like to hear from people who camp in that area and discuss some great places to go.
We carry a portable electric pen and also a high line system. Most of the places we currently go to provide pens for the horses. We are very happy with our Lance but find most campers do go the horse trailer with quarters route. Most are amazed at how much room we actually have in the camper.
Some of our favorite camp sites are Horse Heaven in Oklahoma and Lonesome D in Ar. Problem with living in my area that it is too hot to go in the middle of the summer. Hope to rectify that when we move to Washington state.
I certainly hope there are enough truck camper horse people to keep this thread alive. Please check in and let's get to know each other!

We camp at CTR and Endurance events. Mostly 1 night for a 25 miler, and 2-3 nights for 50 milers. About 99% are self contained in some field or wooded lot where the competition is held. 4x4 is a must. Also have an electric fence and a high line (never used the high line). Since horse fuel is always a big concern for us, we have a second, smaller fence that we move around for the horse to graze.

Thanks Dond for starting this thread. I also horse camp. LOVE to trail ride with my horse. Live in Oklahoma and mostly ride and camp here although I have also been to Lonesome D. Still in the hunt for a truck camper. I really feel like I would have loads more space in a camper versus the trailer with LQ. Plus I have a huge tack room and unless you have a really huge trailer with a midtack, LQ trailers have small corner tack areas. Depending on the place, I use a high-line (picket line), electric corral, portable corral or pens if provided.
I ride an 11 year old Tennessee Walking Horse.
Would love to hear from all you horsecampers out there!

If you come through San Diego on your way to Washington, there are 2 places that I know of with hookups and your own horse corrals. The first is Stagecoach Trails RV park in Julian (it was on RV Today - yesterday), and the Sweetwater Springs Campground (part of the San Diego county park system). Both have riding trails.

We live in Auburn Ca. and the Tevis trail ends at our High School. It starts in Tahoe. The race is on 7/31. We mostly ride the local trails in the Sierra Mts however my wife likes to camp and ride at Pt Reyes horse camp. You can ride the trials or on the beach. Bodega Bay has some nice trails and you can board your horse for $15 a night and camp at the state or county parks.
My wife has a Standard Bred that she rescued after his retirement from the track, he was a trotter and we tow him in a Logan slant load. We have sold the trailer and are buying a camper so BOTH the dog and the horse can travel with us.

dond,
You are from Texas and you don't ride Quarter Horses?
We do a lot of horse camping, but don't take the camper to do it... just pushing it a little too much with weight, I think. We usually don't venture too far as there are oodles and oodles of horse camps in central Oregon where I'm from. We have two Quarter Horse geldings and we go really sloooowwww!!

howboutsallie,
I had several operations on my stomach so I wanted a smooth gaited horse, thus the Tennessee Walker! My wifes horse has a heck of a time keeping up. You mentioned that you horse camped but did not take the camper. What do you stay in when you camp? We deliberately purchased a 9 1/2 footer so we did not have to have too long an extension. There should be no problem on weight. We have gone as far as 1000 miles to camp. Did make an overnight stop for the horses on the way. Am not looking forward to the drive from here to Washington with the camper and the 2 horses. Will be quite a job arranging places to stay on the way.

oktrailrider,
The standard approach that I see on the LQ goosenecks is to get a 3 horse trailer with an escape door and use the stall at the escape door as a storage area.
