dond,
Understood about the smooth-gaited need!
We have a large canvas wall tent that we sleep in when we camp with the horses...it's not as nice as the camper, but it works. We do a lot more camping with our boat. We have to use a 36" extension to tow that and it's not nearly as heavy of a tongue weight as our 3-horse slant with 2 or 3 horses in it. The camper was practically given to us, so when the time comes to replace it, we will definitely be going to a smaller unit...although it's sure going to be tough to downsize! Here are some links to some popular horse camps in my area... none with hookups, though
Maybe I'll see you on the trail sometime!

This thread is a great idea. We've had our horses for 7 years, but our camping has been limited until we purchased our Arctic Fox last November. And it is wonderful! Much more comfortable than the back of a pickup truck. We haven't heard of any horse camps that have hookups in Oregon. They all have corrals (4 per site usually), manure bins, outhouses, and if you are lucky, a water pump. We spent last week at Three Creeks Horse Camp in beautiful central Oregon. What a wonderful place. Campground is at 6400', rode into the Three Sisters Wilderness to an elevation of around 7500'. Breathtaking views, great trails, wonderful weather (25 degrees cooler than town, 20 miles away). Trying to find time to go back one more time before summer is over.

There really are a lot of horse camps in Oregon. The best part is that they are without hookups--You just get a better class of folks!!!
My wife, daughter, and brother in law ride--I frequently take off looking for a place to fish or hunt.We use the camper and horse trailer, unless I bring the boat, then my wife tows the horses with her truck. Chuck

It looks like the forum is getting off to a good start. Glad to hear from the west coast. I expect to do lots of camping in Washington and Oregon one of these days. Another great site is Horsebuddies.com....most of us who trail ride and camp talk on the "Horses" forum under Trail Riding. Most of the people there are located in the Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas area. Would be nice if you guys join in there also. Here is the url:

Thanks for taking the time to post the camping spots. We will check them out and put them on our favorites list. About how many miles from the Seattle area are they (in general). We actually plan on getting a place across the Puget Sound from Seattle. Most likely in a town called Port Orchard near Bremerton.

Could you expound a little on the difference between campers at sites without hookups vrs those that go to places with hookups. You have tingled my curiosity.

Hi, Nice to meet everyone! I haven't quite taken the plunge into fully "camping" with my horses just yet...but ready to roll...have the electric portable fence set up also. Done a few dry runs on the farm though. I recently upgraded truck..and JUST finally got the camper attached to it..so missed out on this summers activities, looking forward to cooler weather anyhow! LOL Have used rig for overnight horseshows.
I do love my truck camper...is popup/lite/low clearance and the idea of having everything separate..so if I do camp with none horsey friends...I can w/o lugging the whole rig like I would if I had a LQ goose! Have used the horse trailer to haul my golfcart, or to load up with the groups camping stuff. Just more options available. We can tow other items like the jetskis also.
Most that have the LQ 3h slant, get the full stud wall for the first stall...to add a cowboy shower in there and to keep stuff for storage so it won't travel underfoot. I added one to mine....is a 4H straight load..and would like to upgrade that one day to have a full tack! My hubby wants me to upgrade to a LQ goose...but I don't think I would purchase one with the shower/bath in it...would just go for a cowboy shower in stud stall....Oh well....need to work more I guess! ALOT more! heheehe...Nice to meet everyone! Kathy

dond,

It's quite a distance, but easily done in one day. I would guesstimate that we are probably around 400 miles from Seattle.
Oh, and that's a nice area up in Washington. I have a friend that lives in Bremerton and my brother lives up north on Camano Island. Get prepared for A LOT of traffic, though! You will want to get out often, I'm sure!

Howdy Howdy,
It's great to see that there is some interest in horse camping. This is my first time to post on this forum, but have been reading along with the hubby (dond). It's good to hear from some new folks!!! We are fairly new to the camping/trailriding experience, have been at it for a couple of seasons. It seems there's always something new popping up during our travels and this site is an excellent source of information. Thanks everyone and Keep up the good work!!!

Yes, most people do that and have a stud wall put in the first divider so the stuff won't slide under it. But I really think I would like a nice truck camper better.

I'm another San Diegan that enjoys horse camping and I too have a lance camper and bumper pull trailer. I've found that a number of great horse camps are accessed by winding dirt roads that are too narrow and sharp for many of the larger living quarter goosenecks. One of my favorite spots is in the northern california redwoods. Another is outside of Tucson AZ. in the winter. I would love to hear about more great horse campgrounds. Shall we compile a list?

I'm also glad there are folks out there that use TCs and pull horse trailers. We live in southwest Virginia and visit horse camps in this area (Tn. Va., N.C.). It's our favorite past time. We have Peruvian Pasos amd a Palomino Racking horse. We like the smooth ride from these gaited horses. We sold our Sundowner gn and tomorrow we are planning to buy a 11Ft Starcraft and a 2 horse tag along with dressing room. I know it's a long camper, but we are getting a good buy on it. We plan to upgrade our hitch and we drive a 2000 Chevy dully with 454 motor and 456 gears. I'd appreciate any advice any one has to offer.
