I am considering giving into the 3 children and husband's plead for a dog. It was never an option because of my allergies. But I have been hearing about breeds mixed with poodles i.e labradoodles that are "allergy friendly".
What mixes are out there that may meet our needs?
- non-aggressive and good with children (my girls are 9, 8 and 2)
- friendly and playful but barks when strangers approach
- smart and relatively easily trained
- good choice for families first dog
- not too large because we would like to take him/her camping with us in our TT.
Are they really allergy friendly? I can last about 24 hours at my Mom's who has a German Shepard with medication, before I have to
Where do find this type of dog. Does anyone know of quality breeders in SE MA or RI?
Cost is also a concern. Are these dogs available for under $500?
thank you!

Labradoodle is not allergy free. You would have to get a mix with two allergy free dogs. Even if they are allergy free dogs you still could be allergic to them. I'm not sure but I think any dog that has hair like a Bichon,Poodle, Maltese, shi Tzu etc. are allergy free. Both my dogs as you see in my signature, I think are allergy free.

We have a mastiff. He does not affect a few people I know who have allergies. Obviously, he does not fit your "size" criteria.
He is smart, well mannered, will sound an alarm if people are anywhere near the house but will not attack. He is an inside dog, thinks he is a poodle.
He sheds year round and slobbers a lot.

The Bichon Frise is considered "hypo-allergenic".
These are high maintenance dogs. Daily brushing of the coats is almost a must. Tear stains cleaned often.
They make great pets.
Think of a large cotton ball with legs.
Now image a man with the nick name of BIKER MIKE walking one of these puff balls with a neon pink leash and pink collar.

my wife has allergies and our 2 chihuahua's don't bother her. If you go with a Chihuahua, get the deer chihuahua, not the teacup, appleahead. The deer has longer legs and gets to be 6-9 lbs. I grew up with one and have 2 now and they definitely don't fit the nervious, yappy little dog stereotype. My two little ones are great with my 6 month old son and also great with Nephews of 3 and 5. I think the barking is more related to the particular dog and how you raise them, not necessarily tied to the breed. I've never heard the older one bark, but the younger one will occasionally bark at a stranger. They don't even bark at the doorbell.
They travel really well (I put their bed in the back seat and they sack out)

I think you will have problems with any breed as far as allergies. As for the rest of your list, there are many breeds which would fit your needs. If I were you I would even consider a “mutt”, take a look at your local dog shelter…
We have a Vizsla which we love. The nice thing about her besides her great personality, she is only 18” at the shoulder and weighs in around 40 pounds. Shedding is not a problem, because she is very short-haired. The other great thing for us, Vizsla's are self exercising… Since the kids are all grown, we just leave her out the back door and she runs hard… of course this can’t be done while camping…
But back to your allergies, I think they all will be a problem. Good Luck at what ever you decide…

What's wrong with a poodle-poodle?
They come in 3 sizes. They have a huge bark for their size, can be very protective, love kids (especially miniatures and standards) and are very smart. They honestly do not shed!
My toy poodle is about 8 pounds. The miniature is 5 months old and 15 lbs. Standards can weigh over 50 lbs.
Their fur (actually it's hair) is very nice if you don't get them the funky dog show haircuts. The need a haircut about once every 6 to 8 weeks. It can be done with a clipper if you're not fussy. I take my dogs to the groomer and she uses a scissors on them.
One problem with mixed breeds is it can be a toss of the dice: you can get the best qualities of both breeds--or the worst. You also have the risk of hereditary diseases for both breeds, not just the diseases common to one breed.
My nephew is highly allergic to dogs, and has no problems with my poodles. His family has a smooth coated wheaten terrier, and as long as the dog gets bi-weekly baths, my nephew is fine. The wheaten terrier is a bit more active than the poodles. Their dog loves to be outside, and has the terrier temperment.
Good luck with your search!

Let me put in my vote for a Brittany. They run about 30-35 lbs, very easy going nature, great with kids and if you brush them about once a week they hardly shed. Ours travels with us everywhere and she seldom barks at all. My sister even gets along great with her and sis gets all sneezy when she looks at a picture of a dog. We found that Brittanys train very easily and trust her off the leash as well as around all the kids in our camping club.
Brittanys are bird dogs and we got ours from a local breeder and paid about $350 for her 6 years ago. They are excellent house pets that don't require a ton of exercise but they love to run free in a field. Here's a couple of pictures....
