I have a Windows ME laptop and want to use Microsoft Streets & Trips software to navigate. I see the version that includes the GPS receiver itself is almost $100 more expensive than the software alone ($25).

Can I use any GPS receiver with this software, and if so which one have you found that works well with it and was cheap?

I found a Rikaline GPS receiver here for $60.

What do you think?

Thanks, guys and gals.

I am using an aftermarket (Holux)GPS that looks almost identical to the one you referenced. I got it on ebay for about $40.00 and have not had any problems with the MS program.

I use the DeLorme Earthmate USB. Works fine with S&T, after installing the DeLorme USB to Serial driver, available on the DeLorme web site.

It comes with DeLorme Street Atlas, which is nice for navigating, but I like S&T MUCH better for trip planning.

Thanks very much for the replies folks. I'm closing this topic because I've learned that Street & Trips does not offer voice guidance which I want. I had just uninstalled Rand McNally Streetfinder Nav Deluxe which was unstable, couldn't find the satellites most of the time and could not generate directions from A to B. Bought it on impulse at Costco. It's going back.

I thought I remembered folks saying S&T was the best which lead me to searching for it at a reasonable price. Now I'm off on a search for software that will provide that, plus 3d maps, I hope.

I appreciate your help.

DeLorme has really nice voice guidance, and voice recognition too. IMO, it is better at real-time navigating than S&T, but it is not as easy to plan a route, and the POI functions are not as nice.

I suggest you get the DeLorme with Street Atlas (around $100 complete), and then maybe pick up S&T on sale somewhere.

I bought the Rikaline receiver with USB interface on eBay -- think it was around $50 with shipping (may have been a few dollars more, can't remember for sure). Works great with S&T.

The talking map software may drive you nuts after awhile. One guy said he was on a parallel road to the one his talking software said he should be on (both went to same place), and for 10 miles his software kept saying he was on the wrong route.
