I think I recall it's about 90 - 95 'lb on my AL wheels. The specs are in the warrantee book for your wheels and tires. Mine were both Carylsle. (Sorry 'bout spelling)

I replaced all of the lug nuts on my 2004 Flagstaff 831FKSS because the plastic stripped or rolled over the edges on two. On trips, I check the torque every 100 miles and have never had one come loose. After pulling the wheels for brake adjustment or bearing lube, I check the torque everytime I think about it. I`ve had it Florida (from Michigan) twice with no lug nut problems.

Bob, are you talking about the plastic on the outside of the nuts?

(I fail to understand why they use that stupid eye-wash******in a critical application...)

Same problem. Brand new trailer 3 days old driven less than 50 miles on upgraded wheels and we lost a tire and caused much damage to the trailer. Lucky that no one was killed on the freeway by the flying tire. The lug nuts were supposedly checked by the delivery guy as well and dealer and we did a quick check before taking a short trip.Did not seem to make any difference it flew off anyway. Forest River is not admiting to anything.

ALUMINUM VS STEEL. First off, it's always a good idea to check wheels, especially if the unit sits (goes for cars too (long story that cost me dearly in the ol' pocket book!)

All said and done, I like steel wheels. yes, you should paint them once in a while, and use a good butyl sealer when replacing the rubber. Aloy wheels do disburse heat better, though unless you are rally racing your trailer I wouldn't worry too much. Alloys also have leak problems. Check TSBs on chevy trucks for example. they also have finish problems that can result in expensive re-finishing proceedures. I wouldn't turn them down, but I wouldn't seak them out either.

It's odd that I found this website today. We just bought a 2005 26ds and today I dropped my truck off to have it wired and found they where cleaning our camper. As I was watching and looking around I found a torque wrench by the tires and was wondering what they might be doing. I guess I have found my answer! Though we haven't taken the Camper off the lot yet is this something that we might want to look into more or just stay on top of? We're new at this!!

FWIW,

When I purchased my FR Flagstaff (w/steel wheels) in Aug. last year, the dealer told me to hand tighten the lugs every 50 miles for the first 300 miles. Was it a pain? Kindof, but everytime I tightened them that first 300 miles, they needed it. The last time I went to tighten them they were all still tight. I guess it is just one of those things that needs to be on that Pre-Trip checklist.

I just got home from towing my 05 Sierra 5er on a 1200 mile trip with the optional aluminum rims. I checked the torque on them on 2 previous short trips and havent had a problem with them. Once they are retorqued and everything is seated it should only be routine maintenance.

I have gone a varoius trips anchecked my torque on my aluminum wheels and they have always been at the required torque (not one loose lug).

Just lucky I guess.

Just FYI. In response to this lugnut deal. A common issue that many RV'ers have is Air Pressure in Tires , Pulling Speed, and Lug nut torque. Many people under inflate their tires, pull in excess of 65MPH and do not torque down their lugs before each trip.

If you havent invested in one yet, I would suggest getting a good Torque Wrench (Walmart for about 80 bucks) and keep it in your trailer. Before each trip, at each fill up, and before return set your lug wrench at 90lbs and hit every lug. It is very common on all trailers, not just the FR models to loose lug nuts.

My 2cents worth.
