We are planning on doing the trip next year and I know that this is a well worked over question, but for those of you that went up in 2005 through Canada and Alaska.. What was your average price per gallon for gas? I am planning on budgeting $3.00 and wonder if that is in the right area???Of course that may all fall by the wayside by next year, but I just wanted a rough estimate....
Currently it looks as if we will be going up to Prince George and out the Cassir and up to Fairbanks, down thru Denali to Anchorage where my brother lives and then down to Prince George via Dawson Creek, over to Jasper, catch #1 at Lake Louise and probably down 97 to Osoyoos and home that way...

One US gallon is 3.78 litres.
One $US will get you $1.20 CND
Gas is going for just around .90 CND per Liter.
So.... about $3.40 US per US gallon.

Sorry, but you're way low at $3.00. Right now it's $1.20 a liter in Whitehorse (about $3.80 US per US gallon), $3.44 a gallon in Skagway.

I am planning a trip as well and would like to know if you can use your credit cards at the fuel stations in Canada? I am trying to simplify the currency exchange.
Thanks, Jim

Don't know if I should laugh or cry at this question.

It depends on which credit card, Jim. Visa is accepted almost everywhere, AmEx and Diners Club almost nowhere, other cards in between.

p.s. the fuel stations that just have a barrel of gas and a handpump in front of the igloo usually don't take credit cards at all

Hey, explorenorth, when I moved up to Montreal in 1969, I heard tales about these Texans who came up to Expo in July and asked: "How far do I have to drive to get to snow". I never thought those tale tellers had .
Major credit cards work and do simplify the exchange $ available question. Chances are your debit won't work, except maybe at ATMs.
Currently our gas is back down to $1.072/litre and by the time Beta and his/her siblings have finished for the season we might even go back down to $0.90/litre in time for your Thanksgiving.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Yes, you can use credit cards for gas and we did. BUT they (the credit card companies) do charge a foreign currency charge. Any where from .50 to 2.00 a transaction. Check with your card first. We averaged 1.20 liter from Quebec's Gaspe to Novia Scotia. Onterio was around .95 to 1.00.

Hey all, prices are changing all of the time, even in provinces which are regulated, ie, Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island. There are many Canadian sites. You can www.google.ca, select pages from Canada and find your favourite. One might be http://roc.gastips.com/region?id=nl, but I see some of their Newfoundland and Labrador prices are old.
Here is Currency Exchange site for Bank of Montreal Best rate right now is 1.17 CAD for $ U.S.
Prices for gas go up when 1) demand is highest or b)supply is lowest.
1) happens during high summer traffic. Go early for lower gas prices.
2) happens when wars occur in the Middle East or when the hurricanes disrupt the Gulf of Mexico. Go early in summer to avoid hurrican season.
Gas prices are lowest in winter. LOL Be a snowbird in Alaska (sorry couldn't resist).
