Were in Asheville and would like to go to N.C. coast. We have just retired and this is our first trip to this area. Would like to get a feel for the people and area. Like small shops, coffee houses, sea shores, outdoors. We have a 28' tagalong. Need suggestion on area to go to and C.Site when we get there. Need full hookup if possible We will arrive the second of Nov. Thanks

Hopefully someone with info will post on the Outer Banks. Very worthwhile to visit. Northern end is more developed & sophisticated. You could stay at Emerald Isle (mentioned above) & take the ferry over to Ocracoke & on up the Outer Banks. Check out the lighthouses! You can go inside Cape Hatteras & Currituck( I think). Congratulations on your retirement!!

Definitely check out Holiday Trav-L Park (www.htpresort.com)in Emerald Isle. We stay there a lot. You will be close to Swansboro, Morehead City, and Beaufort, all of which have very nice shops and restaurants. Take a ferry over to Cape Lookout National Sea Shore. Along the way, you may spot some of the Shackleford ponies on Shackleford banks. If you take the ferry to Ocracoke, you will see a lot of undisturbed country on the way to Cedar Island. We haven't made it to Ocracoke yet, maybe we will when we're down that way over Thanksgiving.

Others have posted on Morehead City / Emerald Isle. From there, take Hwy 70E towards Cedar Island. Follow 70 into Atlantic (NOT Atlantic Beach) and then the Park Service signs for Portsmouth Island Ferry / Morris Marina. Have meal at Marina - Good 'greasy spoon type' burgers and breakfast. Introduce yourself to any locals who will probably be shooting pool / drinking beer. Ask for Kari (owner) and tell her Al from Tarboro suggested you drop in. Get her (or any of the other locals) to tell you the history of the island. If you have a couple of days to burn and a 4WD vehicle, Portsmouth Island has the most pristine beaches left along the east coast. Kari has the concession for the cabins over on the island.
From there, take the Cedar Island ferry to Ocracoke (suggest you check schedule and make reservations before getting this far). Most of the tourists are gone by now and the place has a totally different atmosphere than in the summer. Not sure what campgrounds are available on Ocracoke - We usually stay at the NPS facility and its closed.
Take the ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras. In Buxton, be sure to see the Hatteras Lighthouse. The Diamond Shoals is a good place to eat (try the seafood omelet for breakfast) and the owners and staff will be happy to suggest things to see and do locally. Again, if you've got a 4WD you should hit the beach.
There's a nice commercial campground with full hookups in Rodanthe (just north of the KOA which, I think, is closed for the season).
Fifty miles north is Nags Head. Not sure what campgrounds are open this time of year in that area and don't know any good local spots to ask around in. Here you've got the Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockeys Ridge and Nags Head Woods. A short drive over to Manteo provides Fort Raleigh and the Lost Colony (closed for the season but you can walk through the amphitheater), the Elizabethan Gardens, the QE II sailing ship and one of the NC Aquariums. Check to see if there's a trip out to the Alligator River Wildlife Preserve for a 'wolf howling'.
Have fun and welcome to eastern NC.
Al
