Just returned from a great trip to the Elko NV area. Part of the trip was boondocking on top of this pass only seeing 3 people in 4 days.
Before heading back into the hills, we filled up with fresh water. After the first day we were down to 1/3 of a tank of 40gal. As we are experienced campers, we know how to conserve. What happened to the water?
After checking for leaks etc, everything ok. My only answer was when we were pullig back into this area, there was some very steep grades on this dirt road that required 4wd and low gear, and the water possibly came out the overflow tube.
Have any of you had a similar experience? This is a 2008 30ft 5ver which I would think would be better engineered than to loose water on a steep grade.
Thanks in advance!

when that happens, it can create a siphoning effect that will then draw more water out even when traveling level.

I felt the same way camping one trip last summer. I figured out when filling my tank the tank (RV) was tilted toward the fill and there must have been a 5 gallon air bubble. Then when camping I leveled the trailer a little high on the pump side and probably had another 5 gallons trapped the pump could not get to. So we ran out after two nights when we normally go four nights.

Another thing that might cause a water shortage is starting with an empty hot water heater. You fill your holding tank only to pump 10 gallons of it into the WH.

HI,

If you left the water pump on or have a water accumilator, and also have a small leak into the toilet fill valve (fresh water to fill the toilet) and also the toilet can drip into the holding tank, then it is possible to pump a quart into the black water tank each time the water accumilator is filled up, or perhaps pump a gallon per hour into the toilet (that will drip into the holding tank over time) if the pump is left on and "Burps" every few minutes.

Also a tiny water leak can drip a gallon per hour someplace without making a big puddle. So it is best to leave the water pump off when it is not required.

Fred.

This is your most likely culprit. It can be fixed fairly easy. If you have room you can raise the level of the vent line or (best choice) install a spring loaded check valve in the vent line, this will allow the water to flow out under pressure but will not allow siphoning.

Most tanks are pretty flat but take up a lot of real estate. Ours had three vents, one on each end and one in the middle plus the one near the fill opening. I put a shut off on them so when I was done filling I cold close them up and it could not syphon the tank. I also found that you could have 10-20+ gallons left that wont get to the pump pick up. I "shimmed" up the tank on the off outlet end with a 2x4 so the water would drain to the pump intake even if you are not parked level. Keep every drop and get every drop now.
