We have an '05 HitchHikerII LS with an A&E 8500 awning. We recently met a camper who had replaced his manual arms with 12V arms so you don't have to have the diagonal arms blocking access if you're camped on concrete or asphalt. Has anyone done this modification and was it worth the money or did you wish you hadn't switched?

I would suggest you look at getting replacement arms from Carefree, the Eclipse 12V arms. You can still use the existing A&E roller tube and fabric. The big advantage of the Eclipse arms is that it is the only style that allows each arm to be set for a different height, for rain run-off, yet it still is fully automatic. I've had my unit for 4 yrs now, keep the door side as high as possible while the other side is about 12 inches lower. Sheds rain like a champ. The arms cost about $1100. Automatic motion sensor electronics about $450.
I leave my awning open all the time, like this morning. When I got back to the rig at noon the awning was closed.
