Go with choice C. i'm looking into new tires also and the Toyo looks like the best tire for the money right now as far as wear and tear go.

I'd stick with BFGs - I have never had a problem with them.

Also check your spare tire rim size - even with 17" rims on your truck, the spare is most likely a 16" rim

I also like the CURRENT BigO tires but they will soon be replaced by an inferior asian tire after the sellout of BigO to a foreign company is completed

I just called tech support at Big O... the 3415# is for the 18" wheel with a load index of 123, unfortunately the LI for my size is only 121 which translates to 3195# with only 2 ply sidewall

Hmmm.....I thought they HAD made a change as you had stated, but since I only had them about two months before I sold the truck I guess I don't remember well enough. They DID quit giving any sort of mileage guarentee though (my first set had one.) I figured the tradeoff for better traction outweighed the low ratings (and my steel wheels were rated lower as well. My stock steel wheels were only rated at 3043 I think.

Another note...

The difference betwee 265 and 285 is only 1" of overall height on your truck. and the speedometer is slow by ~7% (when your speedo says you are doing 60, you are really doing 64.2) Your ODO will also be showing you 7% fewer miles and your gas mileage (if so equipped, will be 7% light)

All of this can be corrected with most of the tuners out there...

I have had 285-70's on my Dodge since 5,000 miles on the odo. Most dealerships will reprogram for 1 size larger without charge. My garage is 8' even, and truck fits no problem. I went with Nitto Terra-Grapplers 285-70-E, from Discount Tire's E-Bay site. Oh and a 285-70 spare will fit no problem..Too bad you are not close, I have BFG 285-70D I could give ya. I noticed an improvement in handling with the camper on with the E range tire vs. the D range the old BFG's were. The 285-75 are a bit taller than the 70 series, you can get both in the TOYO AT..

Help me out with some backwards math… I may be looking to buy too much tire.

When I weighed my T/TC combo when I had the camper the ratio was 46/54 front to rear. I have not weighed the truck axles empty but the weight of the truck with full fuel tank is 7500 lbs.

Here’s where I need some check of the arithmetic logic: How can I determine the max weight of a camper I can use with tires having a load index (LI) of 121 which is 3195#?

Assume the GVWR to be capable and do not take it into account right now… let’s just focus on the tires.

Note to BTGrafix...there was a BO tire for 16" rims available with an LI of 128.

Pessimistically assume all camper weight is on the rear axle, I'll guess your empty truck is 4300 front 3200 rear. Those tires will support 6390 lbs so you can add roughly 3190 lbs to the rear axle before overloading the tires.

What is the load index? I'm looking at tires for my 2500HD and have been tossing around the different tires. Not sure what ones to get yet.

From the Tire Rack website:

The load index is an assigned number ranging from 0 to 279 that corresponds with the load-carrying capacity of a tire.

See chart here LOAD INDEX

What I have learned this past week that my stock size 265/70/17E is ONLY available with LI of 121 regardless of manufacturer.

When looking at specification sheets such as THIS ONE it is the number just after the tire size in the first column.
