Just had the Dometic frig recall upgrade done last week. Had frig and LP turned off for several weeks prior to update. After installation I turned on the gas on the stove to bleed the gas line and test the frig. Switched over to gen set and everything worked fine.

Brought the coach home, about 60 miles, and hooked it up to the 50 amp and locked her up.

Went out four days later and heard a "beep, beep, beep". Opened the coach and realized it was the LP alarm. The stove burner was still open just a hair and the coach was filled with LP. Opened everything up and vented the coach. I just can't help but wonder how much longer it would have lasted before the whole thing lit up from a stray spark. Sure glad I don't smoke!!

I though that was more than an alarm, when a leak is detected it was to block off the propane at the tank.

We had something similar happen this past summer. We had been on the road for about 2 hrs when our youngest daughter declared she need to go to the bathroom. Since we were in the middle of nowhere, we pulled off the road and let her use the facilities in the TT. When I opened the door, I could smell the gas. After looking around a bit, I found one of the stove knobs turned on slightly. If we hadn't stopped, it would have been another 4-5 hrs before we would have discovered the problem. I was suprised, however, that the propane detector hadn't gone off.

My DH takes care of the LP tanks, so maybe I'm not understand everyone, but we never have the tanks on when we are moving. They are only turned on after we set up camp and are turned off before hitching back up. I admit that this is not my area of expertise so forgive my ignorance.

BENT ARROW, some units are simply alarms. My detector cuts off the propane at the tank if it's activated. It's a more expensive detector but I think it's safer.

In ArmySFCRet's case, it would have prevented the MH from filling up with propane.

When I turn off a stove burner or the oven, I wiggle the knob back and forth to be sure it is locked in the off position. Got in the habit of doing this years ago.

From now on, when I park it after a trip that gas line is getting shut off at the tank. We are in a out of the coach quite a bit even when it is not being used but being hooked up to the 50amp negates any reason to leave the gas on anyway. Can't blame this one on the little ones, just plain ol' stupidity on my part.

I agree, RV stoves are not real safe. We always check the knobs before leaving the RV or going to bed.

I thought everyone turned off their propane at the tank valve before traveling. Otherwise you have the potential of driving around with a huge bomb behind, as some people have apparently found out. Any kind of accident would likely rupture gas lines which would then spew propane into the air just waiting for an ignition source. And what do people do when standing around gawking at a wreck? That's right, smoke cigrarettes.

The propane tanks themselves can take a lot of abuse. I have seen them pretty beat up in a wreck, but no leaks. While in Germany in the 80s, I saw an incident where a propane tank was blown by a terrorist bomb through a building wall from a VW camper van which was carrying the bomb. The tank survived it somehow. So please, use common sense and turn off those tanks.
