I'm looking to buy a used horse trailer, will generally be hauling only one 800 lb mustang and a bit of gear. I've got an Outfitter Caribou. Any recommendations on brands and price I might expect to pay? I plan on getting something used, but most of the ones I've found advertised are 15-20 years old - don't know if I should stay away from those or not . . . any advice appreciated. this is something new for me.

You may want to check out the followingwebsite
I had good luck finding my trailers there. If you are getting an older trailer, I found that although aluminium trailers were more money even used, they were in far better shape.

The cheaper horse trailer almost always are steel with wooden floors that sooner or later(usually sooner) need to be replaced.

The floor should be the 1st item you check.

Agreed, always check the floor first. Horse/cattle urine is corrosive to steel, and without a good coating on the cross braces, it could cause problems... Just go check them out and get a feel for the people. We have a horse trailer handed down from the gf's grandma. It a 1985 model I believe, but has been taken cared for... It still in good structural shape, however I will be sanding/undercoating the frame/undercarraige

I think I'm on the wrong site. Is this Craigslist? Is there some camper thing lurking around here I don't see? There it is: Outfitter Carabou!
Good, I'll join the parade anyway.
I'm looking for a very old, fully covered, floor optional, 2 horse, straight load trailer myself.
I don't have or want a horse. I have bears. I don't want bears, but here in the West Slope, Northern Sierra Nevada, we got bears. We have no trash pick up, so once a month I go to the dump with a pick up load of trash. Hmmm? Where to store the trash in the interim? I put up a small building figuring that would keep those pesky ursines on the outside. Not so, low sulfur breath. The bears simply pulled the wall down and made themselves at home. Now store all the trash in my diminishing garage. I want my garage back.
What about commandeering an old horse trailer to store and deliver trash to the landfill? This could work. Built like a tank. Weld up all the openings. Use my car trailer license plate when going to the dump. Yeah, this could work.
I've looked at a couple, for $400-500 but they were absolutely clapped. I'm still looking.
I'll eventually get one, paint it white, and in 12" letters on each side announce its new address: WHITE TRASH. Or maybe TRAILER TRASH. I'll sort that out later.
regards, as always, jefe

I'll admit that I still don't have an RV yet, but do have the horse trailer. When I first went out to purchase a horse trailer we had only one horse at the time. My wife and I decided on two requirements - 1. Slant Load 2. Aluminum since we had a 1/2 ton truck and didn't want the additional wear and tear of steel and chase rust around all the time. That was 5 years ago and just recently we paid off the loan for a 2 horse Exiss, Slant with Tack Room. Now we have two horses an stepped up to a 4X4 208 Toyota Tundra from my 4X2 Ford F150. (Both are good trucks, just timing and dealer deals really made my decision on switching)

Even though you have one mustang @ 800 lbs, you need to look at how the horse trailers for one. I have seen too many with straight loads where the horse will not go in compared to a slant. You also never know if you will ever have to haul two horses too.

Look around, the horse industry really stinks right now and you could find an Used Exiss, 4 Star, Featherlight, 4J, Classic or Sooner will be easy to find.

One more thought to share. Make sure you find an extruded aluminum floor rather than wood.

Us Brenderup owners never sell them cause they are so great! But if you do find a preowned Baron (2 horse with tack room)out there, they weigh about 2000 lbs empty, have a steel frame with fiberglass top, phenolic sides, and "fluid" resistant laminate floors. The loaded tounge weight is about 200 lbs and you can tow them with a minivan (so they present no problem to an overloaded TC). There are a million or so safety features for the horse as well as fitting anything from ponies to Clydesdales. They are streamlined, self centering, have great surge brakes, etc. And, of course, they are easy to load with a 5 foot, rubber coated rear door/ramp. My horse particualrly likes the ride with the speed rated radial tires. There is a video out there where Simon (the US distributor) expands on the features.

Thanks vanbikehorse - I found a used Brenderup, in good condition, and will pick it up this week. You are right about them being rarely sold - this is the only one I've found in several months.

Like stated above check the floor very close. Even if it is "fluid resistant laminate" it may still be rotten. Cheaper to replace the floor than it is to replace the horse.
