My question is, do I need lights on my car even if the dolly has? I think I do but have people telling me no. Just wondering what others on here do.

You need tail lights. The lights mount to the trunk of the towed vehicle.

They say that it varies from state to state. In Indiana they do not require lights on the toad if the dolly has them. I make it a rule not to pull at night but a couple of times I got caught & needed to anyway. Since this could happen again I purchased a set of magnetic lights for the toad. Although not required I just feel better with them as the toad extends a good 8 foot beyond the dolly lights & I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I believe that some states require lights to be within X feet of the rear of the vehicle, and a tow dolly wouldn't do that.

It will vary from state to state, since we travel in different states and have to comply with all the laws we have them.
I wire into the toads wiring and use diodes, never failed me yet and I don't have to lug around another set of lights or worry about the wiring scratching the toad. Did use magnetic ones on one Honda ONCE, never again!

You should check with your states motor vehicle department.
Florida, for example, doesn't require lights on the car if the dolly has lights, and further I was told that as long as the lights from my motor home are visible I didn't have to have lights but since I had lights on the dolly it was a mute point.

And just how far is the rear of the car from the lights on the dolly? Laws or no laws, I think lights sound like a very good idea and maybe even commonsense.
