just came back from a 1000 mile trip in new tt, I thought I had sway control built into my w/d hitch but they were a lot of white knuckled truck passes. I think I want to move up to a tandem axle and probably a v-8. I current have a 16' single pulled by a v-6 nissan or my 4 cyl diesel jeep. Do the tandem units handle better on the road?

Probably but you might want to try a Hensley Arrow hitch before making the big step to a new RV. You should be able to use the HA on the bigger rig if you end up going that way.

You "thought" you had built in sway control. Maybe if you can provide more info about your hitch setup you might get some more responses.
I towed a 16' Sunline with a 1999 4dr. GMC Jimmy for years using a single friction sway bar and it was solid as a rock.

Sounds like an overloaded TV or TT rear heavy, maybe both. The single axle trailers I've owned handled just fine behind my pickups, but it was a different story behind my Jeep and FJ40. Good luck.

Direct answer to your question is that with duel axles the trailer will always track with more stability unless axles are mis-aligned. If you tow your current trailer again I'd just add a friction bar as they perform very well on shorter trailers as long as they're installed and USED correctly. Good luck / Skip

A Reese Strait-Line hitch w/included Dual-Cam HP sway control, or an Equal-I-Zer brand hitch, which also includes sway control, can be bought for $400-$700, depending on where you buy them. A Hensley Hitch will run about $2500. But either of the three would be much cheaper than buying a truck with dual rear wheels. For a 16' trailer, you shouldn't need Duals. I pull a 33' travel trailer with single rear wheels, and many people pull trailers much heavier than mine with single rear wheels. Your biggest need is a good sway control. By the way, tandem axles are two axles, one behind the other. It's not the same thing as dual rear wheels.

James, would you mind giving the members more info here.
I think they can help you just need more details.
Tell us about your tow vehicle.
Your hitch you are using.
How about the weight of your TT and if you have a rear kitchen.
I pulled a 40 foot TT (Layton) to FL for about two thousand miles and had white knuckle the whole way down.
I was pulling with a one ton Dually also.
Had the right hitch.
It was Christmas time, I knew what the problem was. I pull trailers every day for work.
Any way, I asked my wife as 18 wheelers were passing buy, Do you have any thing loaded in the back of the Trailer, Yes she said with a smile.
What is it I said?
She said it is your Christmas Gifts !
For Christmas I got 1,000lbs of Craftsman Tools !
Thought you all would like that story.
So, not saying you have a weight issue but do give us more info.

I agree. It's way too soon to give up on this combination. The fix is probably simple, and inexpensive.
Of course, if you're in love with camping and just neeeed that bigger rig, by all means... Just don't go spending tens of thousands because of this issue alone.
Look back at your trip. Were they white knuckle moments because you were thinking "Oh God here comes a truck" or because something actually happened?
Make sure you have sway control. If not, add a simple friction bar.
Adjust your W/D hitch. If you're depending on what the dealer did, there's your problem. They rarely get it right. Your Jeep and trailer should all be sitting level together. No squat in the rear of the Jeep. If you're not distributing the weight properly, you aren't pushing enough weight on to the trailer tires, and they won't have enough traction to stand up to the bow waves from big trucks.

sorry about the lack of info- I have a pro series w/d hitch with friction sway control set for 750 lbs, the minimum. My trailer weighs 3000 lbs with 400 lbs hitch weight. The trailer is 13'5 plus hitch- 17' total length and has -0- aerodynamic effects, in fact it's a box. If I raise the w/d hitch another notch, it's almost impossible to unhitch. The t/v is a diesel crd Jeep Liberty 4 cy rated for 5000 lbs. The wheels are 14" on the trailer. So, I'm thinking of either getting a tandem r vision fun finder 18' 5" long which is 1.5 longer and 2 more wheels and another 500 lbs weight. Or I can downsize to a TADA which is a lot lighter and I would not need a new t/v.
