AZ,A/C, Ran and everyone else...

Do you have to remove the rear wheels to do the airbag install? I just bought the Firestone airbags and figure I can do the install if I don't have to remove the rear wheels.

If the wheels have to come off...I'm gonna have to get a shop to do it.

Sorry to tell you this but the wheels have to come off. The only problem is the lug nut torque. You will need a torque wrench 300 to 600 ft pounds. It is not recommended but I used the leveling jacks to raise the rear end. That will clear the tires enough to get them off. As I said it is not a recommended way to do this. Take all safty precautions that are possible. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a torque wrench and tools to remove and reinstall the wheels. You cannot drill the holes needed with the wheels and tires installed on the vehicle. Again I am not recommending that the leveling system be used to raise the vehicle to do this job.

I do not think you can do the install without removing rear tire and wheel assemblies. The lug nuts require a 3/4" breaker bar. I added a 3' pipe to break the nuts loose. As stated above I used the MH jacks with 6 " X 8" timbers under each jack to raise rear of MH. Installed 6000 lbs jack stands under axle for safety. Be aware that wheel and tire assemblies weigh over 100 lbs each. Install is easy with installation instructions.

Oh bloddy 'ell! I just made an appointment tomorrow AM with my local heavy duty truck and RV fixer upper joint to do the install. Removing the rear wheels and what not is simply something I can't do because of some medical limitations. I did do the shocks and stuff...but pulling the wheels is just to much.

I'll let you all know how it works out.

All,
Appreciate the info on this thread. I have an 07 Four Winds 32B Kodiak (Chevy C5500) that I use to tow a 10k capacity racecar trailer. I've towed with the trailer fully loaded and got a lot more droop to the rear than I thought I would, so I ordered Riderite bags (with heavy duty compressor and tank which will come in handy at the track). They'll be installed this week at a local Les Schwab. Had never heard of the 19k spring upgrade until tripping on this thread.

Any idea how I can find out what rating springs mine has?

Another question - Mine still have OEM shocks. Bilstein or Koni worth the money to help damp down a vibration I have at about 60 mph (tires have been balanced)?
Thanks for any input anyone has.

There should be one of the following codes on the sticker above your driverside sunvisor
Rear Tapered Leaf
GXA = 13,500 lbs.
GQ0 = 15,000 lbs.
GN2 = 19,000 lbs.

Thanks a bunch for the codes. Should have joined this forum years ago. Guess its time to research purchasing and installing heavier duty springs.

An update on the air bags. I got to Burlington Iowa and was prepareing to leave after a short stay for a family reunion. I was checking the pressure in the air bags and discovered that the left one would not register or recieve air. I got under the MH to take a look and found that it had a rub through that corresponded with the angle of the upper bracket. I have no idea how the rub through could have happened. Even with no air there is at least an inch of clearance between the bracket and the bag. The other side is ok and I have let air out to about 30 psi. I was running them with 80 psi and that was good all around. All of the hardware and bracketing are secure. Has anyone had this happen to them?

I installed the new air bag yesterday and have aired them both up to 85.5 lbs. I observed the the lower bracket that attaches to the spring had shifted aft and may have been the cause of the rub through. I adjusted and retorqued the bracket and bolts. We shall see if that did the job. I was able to aquire just one bag form a loacal parts house in Ogden Ut. so didn't have to buy a complete kit. I will keep you informed.
