The time came to replace the aging boombox, and walk-around at Glamis in February convinced us that the 3-piece was the sh*t, but why burn down my Optima Blue Marine with an inverter? A little Burning-Man 12V research made the solution clear. Last weekend we test-drove it at the La Jolla Indian Reservation Campground in San Diego County and it generated thumbs-up, a teenage dance party, and a even Merle and Willie never sounded so good! Total cost: Just under $ 300.00...

Is that a marine radio setup? It looks like what I've seen in some boats, i.e., making it water resistant and such, good idea.

Yes bpitt, at least the JBL Seagm3 housing. This is a "waterproof" housing with retracting smoke cover. Fits any Din1 radio and can be mounted above or below a boat dashboard. I added a short length of wood to create a way to easily place it on a table or carry it like a handle. The antenna is a marine soft antenna.

Thanks
I'm running an Optima Blue-Top Marine Deep Cycle battery purchased at Costco during a sale. It's a Group 24 Battery but it's about 20% smaller in size. Best of all, it's Advanced Glass Mat technology so it doesn't degas H2, doesn't leak battery acid (so it doesn't need a plastic battery case), can be carried or used at any angle, wears out 1/2 to 1/4 as fast over its lifetime as would a lead-acid, and charges much faster than a standard lead-acid battery. These retail for around $200 but I bought one last year on sale for about $150.00. And why not? In a typical weekend I'd go through over $20 worth of C cells to keep my music running, and now I can also power 18" led lighting effects bars from CityLites, run other LED lights, recharges phones, etc. I've not yet run the battery down to where I needed to stop and recharge after a full 3-day campout running dual 18" LED light bars and (almost)non-stop music. I use battery-charger quick-disconnects at home (M/F) for the trickle charger, and once at the campsite plug in the same connectors (M/F) crimped and shrink-wrapped to 12V cigarette-lighter type outlets from Radio Shack and two 3-way outlets from Frye's. You can see the connectors in the second rear-view shot, there are three in the photo: one for power coming from a fused 12V male cigarette lighter plug, and two for the L and R channels connected to Monster speaker wire.

So you were the one in the campsite across the way in the primitive state park campground in West Virginia, who, along with the people with the whining dogs two campsites over, who wrecked my two days in the "wilderness" last week.
Nice work. Got to love the technology!

That was not us, famousperson. Maybe you're confusing this with the time in '71 when you were way across the river from us and heard our Gibson guitarist and his Peavey Amp playing CCR off a generator while we shared sheet music. I was raised in the "wilderness". It's not found in any campground. We always greet our neighbors when we set up camp and I explain to them that we enjoy a lot of different music in camp, and if they find it too loud or distracting to come by, make a request, or give us a wave and we'll work it out. The rangers have NEVER responded to music complaints coming from our campsite, so I guess it's true about playing everything from 'Hank to 'Hendrix. Or we're blessed to not camp around people who don't like music!
