NEVER bought a pre-filled tank.
Now I have to travel far to get my LP. Disconnect tank and walk next door to the Mom & Pop station. The price rolls with their cost as they always full fill.

I heard this several months ago and did not care as I always have my tanks refilled at the gas company and never exchange, but I did start to notice that everyplace I see that exchanges tanks has it clearly posted on the cage about the reduction of gallons so I don't see what the big deal is. You should be able to read and tell what you are getting at the exchange. A lot of products have done the same thing... same price or higher, smaller quantity.

My reason for a pre-filled tank was always to swap out an obsolete gas valve, and get the swap tank with the modern, 'legal' OPD-equipped 3-point knob valve.

Propane tanks should only be filled to 80% of its capacity to allow for expansion. That means a 20# tank should max out at 16#'s of gas. An internal float in the OPD operates and does not allow more propane to be transferred.

Not really.

A DOT consumer propane cylinder is filled with liquid to 80% of its water capacity. The water capacity (47 pounds) of a 20# bottle is such that 80% full (4.7 gallons) is 20 pounds of propane. The water capacity of a 30# bottle is such that 80% full is 30 pounds of propane. A 40# bottle holds 41 pounds, the 100 pound bottle holds 102 pounds, at 80% water capacity.

If you want to see a low fill, look at the 16 oz disposable. They are closer to a 50% of the water capacity (WC). I refill mine (for home use only) to about 80% WC.

Thanks Tom (tatest) for the primer on LPG cylinders. The only thing I can add is that OPD valves were needed because of filling stations trying to give an honest 20# (4.7 gal.) fill on a tank that was not empty.

graybeard:
That was the 100% reason the return stations appeared at the box stores. They retired the old tanks, but applied their own spin on the fill owing to the consumer that doesn't think the rising gasoline prices also apply to LPG.
