While efficiency is wonderful but convenience is worth a bit too. I normally used the fride on electric and the water heater on gas. Now if electricity is furnished I use it for water heating and heating of the unit. Where we stay in the winter I have to drive about 10 mile round trip to fill the LP tank. That itself is about a gallon of gasoline. Add that to the price of the LP. If I can make the trip take care of other chores such as grocery shopping that helps. Also I am getting too old to be carrying full tanks of LP. Knees seem to rebel. I too would like the buck a gallon for LP. I bought thousands of gallons for a dime or less a gallon. Motor fuel.

Another thing to consider is you don't have to refill the electricity. For that reason, I run the dual-fuel items on electricity when I can.

since i pay for the fuel to run a generator to create electricity, and i can guarantee that for me, propane for fridge and WH is cheaper than gasoline generate electricity.

if your in a park with NON-metered electricity, then use the electric, IF you pay for the electric, you need to RUN the numbers

Quick and easy way. Multiply electric cost X 22. If propane cost is less than that result, then it is cheaper to use propane. Maybe not exact, but is close enough for government work.

That's pretty close.
The unadjusted factor is 26.8. Suburban Manufacturing says furnace efficiencies range from .7 to .8 and water heaters are about .7.
Multiplying the factor by .7 gives 18.8 and by.8 gives 21.4.

22 assumes the appliances are a little more efficient than they probably are, but as you say it's close enough for a quick approximation.
I agree. I always used 10 cents a KWH and 2 dollar a gallon propane as the break even point, again, close enough.

Knowing it all depends on how much you pay for propane and elec. and how you use it. I and two others tried an experament this last winter in FL. Propane was 2.75 a gallon and elec. was 16cents per kilowatt. Being that the HW heater uses the most we ran it on gas for one month only turning it on when we needed it and one monthe on elec. doing they same. In all cases there was less than 1$ differance. The only differance we each noted the water heated up faster on propane. One unit was a tag camper 25ft., another was a 5ver 32ft. and my 36ft. MH and each one occupied by a man and a woman and in my case my 85# dog.

This is my solution-

Remove the factory installed “Snap Stat” on the Propane side of the HWH. Install a Stat. that turns “ON” about 10* colder than the factory “Snap Stat”. Leave the elect Stat alone. I.E. make sure that the propane turns ON about 10* cooler than the electric Stat.

Operate the HWH with Electricity and Propane both turned “ON”

Now when you have a normal hot water useage the Electric “Stat” will cycle ON/OFF to maintain hot water. If you continue to use the hot water and the electric element can’t keep up and the HWH temp. decreases 10*, the Propane stat. will turn on to provide additional heat. Both sources of heat will be activated, as the HWH temp. increases the Propane will turn “OFF” first then the electric will continue ON until the final temp. is reached.
