wp6529 wrote: why would this even be an issue? Wow.. where have YOU been? This topic comes up all the time..(but not in Tow Vehicles) at least once a week it seems. And few of us have DC only refers.
All these arguments make a lot of sense, especially about the starters, cell phones and coasting into the station ( a hoot). However, there are those who do believe and will continue to believe that reducing ANY risk is a good thing... even if that risk is one in a hundred billion.. it doesn't matter. It just makes them feel better.
You're probably more likely to win the lottery every week for a year than blow up a gas station with an RV refer.

Agree highly 'unlikely', but mention that it also means a 'remote' possibility.
Ask your insurance carrier if they would cover you if that remote possibility
ever crosses your path...
How hard is it to relight one?

They probably would. Insurance is for protecting you against idiot mistakes. They cover you if you run a red light and smash into someone, or not pay attention and hit a parked car, why not this?
Either way, I've never put it out. Like someone said earlier, if there is that high a concentration of fumes at the gas station, your starter, brakes, exhaust, etc are just as likely to set the place on fire as your fridge.
Now, if your refrigerator is anywhere near your fuel filler spout, then I'd turn it off, since fuel splashes happen all the time.

My RV fridge is what -- 30' from my fuel tank filler?
Heck, you can pour diesel fuel on the ground (or gasoline) and drop a lit cigarette on it, and it won't ignite. Mythbusters tested it.

You guys freaking kill me!!
All you knuckle heads pulling over to shut off your fridge before you pull in; do you shut your vehicle off and coast in? Then coast out? Make sure there isn't a dragging chain!!....snip
Dragging chains can easily start a fire and you do not even need gasoline. Watch your safety chains

87 octane will. I did it as part of my presentation on flame-front propagation (comparing race fuel to pump gas) in my thermodynamics course years back. Higher octane stuff won't, however. I did this with embers, since the state of CA wouldn't let me light a cigarette in one of their classrooms...
But yeah, either way, gas stations aren't as easily exploded as you might think. Like i said, I'd only be concerned if your fridge was close to your fuel cap.

Not trying to support any argument but while your fridge may be 30' from your tank filler how close is it to the person fueling in the next lane? Or from someone fueling portable gas tanks which can give off more fumes? Just a thought.

Use the truck lanes of the F/J's and you only have to be concerned about whether the nozzle will fit into that silly little restriction in the filler neck of most P/U's. No gas, trucks, gens, reefer's, aux diesel heaters all running merrily away while mega-fueling going on right beside them. Propane fridge - way back there? Not a problem.

OK, so maybe you guys are fishing, I took it hook line and sinker.
The sad thing is that I think they're serious. It amazes me that some of these guys ever leave the house, they're risk averse to the point of near insanity.
