My 96 F53 Itasca Suncruiser is real hard to shift out of park. Have to stand on the brake pedal to get it out of park.

There is a switch under the brake pedal arm that needs adjusting.

Ah, NO. There is no switch under the brake pedal arm on a 1996 F53. The stop light switch is clevis mounted.
Look on the brake linkage, under the dash, close to the fire wall. You'll see the stoplight switch. You'll need to pull the clevis pin to change it.

Does anybody have any pictures of this area? Maybe copies of factory manual pages or whatever?

Have to wonder if you're parking on a hill or incline also? I have a 1997 F53 and the brake light switch will not allow you to shift out of park unless the switch is depressed. Other then that, there is nothing else. Easy way to tell if it's the brake light switch is have some one stand by the back and let you know when the brake lights come on. if you have to press the brake peddle more then an inch before the lights come on, the switch needs adjusted. If you can't shift out of park (easily) with the brake lights on, something else is wrong.

Look on the floor by the brake pedal. See the ½" steel rod? Follow it up until you see its termination point.
Thats where the stop light switch is. It can NOT be adjusted, only replaced.

When you replace that switch, please post the part number here. I think I will carry a spare.

Pirate,
Some of the 96 and older parts may not work on your 97. Ford made some serious design changes for 97. As an example, your master cylinder is mounted on the fire wall, while older F53s have the master cylinder mounted on the left frame rail. The rear springs were also changed for 97. Not all F53 are created equal.
