I hear you on finances. I'm just feeding 5 of us and it's ridiculous!
I think our camping styles are probably very similar. We try to pack in as many shorter trips as we can and we try to stay pretty local. I hate to waste a huge percentage of my camping trip just getting somewhere. I would think between TX and AR you should have some beautiful places to camp.
Good luck staying cool!

If you go with fans, several smaller fans do much more cooling than one large fan unless everyone wants to sit close together. Go for electricity if you can.

racing75, do you guys ever find yourself in west Texas? We use to camp at Abilene State Park a couple times each month during the 3 years we were stationed at Dyess AFB. I remember it as being very nice and quiet. Haven't been there since '97 so I don't know if things have changed. Some very good steak and bbq places in Abilene (as there is in most of TX. Gosh I love TX!).
Thought I'd throw that out there even though it's a hike from where you are.

Never been to West Texas....We're leaving tomorrow for the Rio Grande Valley. Gonna be there till Sunday. My wife's family is there. Her Grandmother is not doing to good. We lived there from 2003 until last year and we moved here to Mt Pleasant. A couple of real nice county parks there....Isla Blanca on South Padre Island and Adolphe Thomae Park at Arroyo City. I think the closest state park is Falcon State Park. Never been there though. And in South Texas if you love Bass Fishing like we do, its about the only place South of Corpus Christi its Bass fish. In South Texas its all about saltwater fishing. A friend of mine I worked with moved to the Odessa/Midland area as well as our ex city manager. He been wanting us to go visit but we haven't yet. We love Texas too, so we're happy on waiting on the weather to cool and keep camping in Texas....We bought a State Park Pass this year and it comes in real handy.....Well worth the money. We support our state parks and lakes 100% and practice CPR (catch, photograph, & release) while Bass fishing. Everyone have a good remaindewr of the week and a good weekend.....We'll be back Sunday.......Thanks for all the comments on dealing with the heat..........Kevin

Try a test run in the back yard.
You can find out what works or doesn't work the easy way when you have a back up or out of the back yard plan.
Well, throw my idea out the window. Didn't see your last post until after my comments.
For others asking ideas, the backyard is the best place to find what does or does not work. Also comforting to kids to know the security of home is a few steps away.

Wow this is exactly what I was looking for. I tent camp because I usually pull my boat and don't want to mess with a tandem rig. I have enough trouble with just the boat Anyway, the lakes I like to fish on in New Mexico are pretty hot during the day and beautifully cool in the evening. I would like to have the comfort of a pop-up without having to tow another vehicle. Seems like a generator and AC unit might fit the bill.

Try and get shaded sites, they are much cooler than the sites in the sun.
We have fans that run on batteries but we also take several that use electricity in case we have it. Several small fans help more than one large fan.
And they now make in-room air conditioners. I do not know anything about them beyond the fact that they do not have to sit in a window. I saw one recently at Walmart and Meijers. They probably have them at any similar stores.

Trying to decide how to camp at another lake other than our seasonal camper in the summer without an a/c as well. Interesting thread! I really don't want to spend money on a popup just for the a/c and would prefer just to use the tent and buy an a/c.
It's hot and humid as heck in Alabama and fall is not an option for us!
We're gonna dig out the tent this evening when it gets cooler.
