Interstates are all an easy drive as far as climbing and decending. I found I70 to be just fine and very scenic a few years ago.

For me, that would be time vs. scenery. I'd pick I-80 if I just wanted to get somewhere and I-70 if I wanted to smell the roses. Grades are worse (but managable) on 70 the wind is worse (Westbound) on 80.

Pretty much sums it up -- I-70 from Denver is one of the few Interstates I enjoy -- actually get off on Rt 58 to Rt 6 in Denver to catch a little Mountain Beauty along Clear Creek before I jog back out to the Interstate -- Loveland Pass is fun but a little bit of a challenge in an RV.

As for downshifting, Yes it is always smart to go down in the same gear you come up.

And yes Rt, 6 goes thru Loveland Pass and I-70 goes thru the tunnel -- just technical, that they are different animals -- Tunnel's and Pass's are different.

Enjoy your trip --- Smell the Roses as who Knows when you'll get back,

JMHO,
hahahahaa - you folks crack me up with your technicalities! Yes tunnels are different, they provide shade! Other than that, with I-70 climbing from 6,500 ft to 10,400 ft up 6% and 7% grades with runaway truck ramps on both sides of the tunnel entrance, it sure looks like a pass, drives like a pass, and sometimes even smells like a pass when sniffing the brake linings from the trucker in the right lane geared down to 25mph with the 4-way flashers on!. True the tunnel ended up bypassing the original Loveland pass summit and took the top 40% off of the climb back in the 70s, but it didn't elimimnate the other 60% of the climb, and if the ruts get any deeper on the eastbound side up the hill, I think your tires my actually be driving on the original pass once again!

Just came over again last weekend. The westbound side has been paved and is quite pleasant. I avoided the eastbound side altogether and came through 40. In reality, the access climb and descent to the tunnel, or whatever you folks feel like you want to call that rapid change in elevation, is not as bad to handle as the final descent into Denver eastbound through Genessee. The traffic gets thicker and a little more aggressive and makes it a little harder to maneuver down the steep grades.
