Has anyone tried to modify the bunk bed in a Class C to make a crib for a baby out of it. (not the overhead bunk).
We found out three days prior to leaving for a month that it is going to be necessary for us to take our 10 month old grandson with us. I do not want to make the little feller' sleep in a playpen all the time.
I believe maybe that I can add some braceing wood and add one of the expandable child gates to the bottom bunk. (FS36 Jayco with side bunks).
Has anyone tried that? Would it be too "flimsey" where he could push against it and fall out?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Back during the winter, there was a couple that had twins that was trying to GIVE AWAY a bunk crib that they had made. You might want to search for that thread to get some ideas. There were pics.

Here's the thread

Get some either cargo netting like they use behind PU trucks, and take some sunscreen and place grommets around it at attach points so he won't fall out, or some strong velcro would work.

Just be careful modifying things to fit for a small infant so that they don't get caught in netting or in boards that aren't standard safety rails. When my kids were that small, they either slept with me or in a pack-n-play. When they got a little bigger, I used a bedrail under the mattress.

If you have room for the playpen, he should be happy to sleep in it. My kids slept in playpens when visiting the grandparents, never bothered them. Now they only used the playpen for sleeping, we did not use them as a play space. My nephew sleeps in a playpen at the grandparents homes too.

I do know that at 10 months each of my three kids were great climbers and could get out of their crib or playpen in a minute. If your grandson shows any climbing ability you may need to child proof your RV.

We tried to modify the bunks with gates, nets, etc., when our kids were toddlers. I thought I had a decent plan until the old fireman in my head kicked in, and I realized that if A: one of the kids got choked, we would not be able to get to them fast, B: they had a risk of injury or death if they became entangled in the netting, and C: if there was a fire, how fast could we get them out? The simple solution for us was one of those pack and play playpens. It was a familar environment for the kids and you could break it down and store it in minutes, and it was relatively safe.

That is the one question that kept going through my mind as well. If we had a fire, could we get him out in time.
I ended up taking our only other option. I am paying for a baby sitter while his mother is working, so we did not bring the little feller with us. Kinda miss him though. We are in Illinois now for the 4th, then will head out west, then be back home around first week of August.
Happy 4th to all.

Thats what we did. We just put a baby gate up between the seats. Works well til they start to climb. We also put our playpen in there.
