We and our friends want to go to Brice and Zion this year, we're thinking sometime in September and was told the last week of September and early October are about the best. What do you think?

Zion is much lower and much hotter than Bryce. My vote would be October, might be a bit cool in Bryce, but won't be as hot in Zion as September.

Late September through October are may favorite times for Zion. Bryce is about 5,000 feet higher in elevation,it will be cold in October.

We went last year during the last week of October and first week of November. On November 1st, we were hiking up the Narrows in Zion. The weather was absolutely beautiful--low 80's everyday. We did Zion, Bryce, Arches, Cedar Breaks and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. On the day we started back home (November 7th), it was snowing.
If you do plan to go to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, be aware that the visitor center closes sometime in October and there is no food anywhere close. We went on Halloween and nothing was open. Luckily, we had some trail mix in the truck. Also, check to see if your RV park is open if you plan your trip for late October--many close on October 31st or earlier.
I would love to convince DH to go back again this year. The scenery in Zion with the gray mountains and the fall colors was amazing. I got so many beautiful photos. Bryce is also very, very beautiful. Be sure to take good hiking boots and a walking stick with you--especially if you plan to walk down into Bryce to get a different view of the hoodoos. I would encourage you to do that if you are physically able. The walking stick also prevented a couple of slips into the river when we were in Zion.
We stayed at a really nice RV park in Hurricane, Utah.

I have also been thinking of doing the canyon lands trip in the latter half of September and early October. Are reservations a must or can one find Rv park openings on a drive up basis at that time? I've never taken an extended trip in my new (to me) RV so forgive me if the answer is obvious. Thanks!

Each to his own comfort level, we never make reservations until just before we stop, that said, we have no issue with any Wal*Mart.
Those who have not been in Utah and Colorado in the Fall are Truly missing the Boat!
