You can take all the alcohol and wine you can drink but be prepared to pay duty on the excess amount. I give them a list whenever I cross and pay the duty. Still more convenient than looking for a wine store on the road.

Sure I have a gps but more convenient to reach into my wine rack. Still found less expensive to pay duty than to buy in Canada.

Heading to Banff and Jasper next week , from Sonoma County CA up through the Idaho Panhandle into Alberta.

A bit confused on what types of food I can take in my frig - do we have to run "bare bones" supplies and then stock up in Canada? I understand open packages of meat, but what kinds of fruit, refrigerated food, packaged food, cereal, noodles, soup cans, candy?

Thanks in advance for answering such a simple question!

I would suggest no fresh veggies or fruits crossing the borders. Use them up before crossing and restock on other side. This past May I crossed into Canada and they had me trash can the above. I then drive on to Ft. Saint John and buy the above fresh food items grown in CA. and advertized as such. You get the picture.

Long guns you have to register and pay some fee/tax. I would never tell them the long guns were for self protection while traveling. From what I hear this is very low on their reasons list to have a weapon.

I have traveled through the western half of Canada several times and always without a weapon. Odds are in your favor of not needing a weapon if you plan on
traveling major roads and visiting settled areas. Backpacking in bear country may be a different story. I have enjoyed the Canadian people and found them to be friendly and helpful. Excluding backpacking bear country ... I would say leave the guns at home and go enjoy the Canadian country and people.

there are plenty of grocery stores in Niagara Falls-big ones too! Also, liquor stores and beer stores. Just ask someone in the campground, they will point you in the right direction. Dona

ps=streets in downtown Niagara are narrow....

When we went through, as long as the food was in original packaging, they didn't seem to concerned about food. They don't want you taking firewood across the border as well, so leave that home.

We live with in 1 hrs of the Wash State Border between Canada and the USA.( Canadain side) When we go camping down south we don't pack the following.
Meat of any kind, Fruit, Veggies, Booze ( except 4 bottles of wine, 2 each), diary products like cheeses. We hit the first Wal-Mart south of the 49th and buy what we will need for the trip we are on. as for RV basics, we have never had an issue, with can goods and stuff like that, however each guy at the boarder is different, some just ask what we have and let us go, other want to do a walk though after I have opened up the slide.
Have fun on your trip

Don't try to take any wood into Canada either. We whad to throw out 10 hunks of firewood while we waited for them to search our trailer. They found we had a couple of bottles of wine and a part bottle of gin. As I had bought booze at the dutyfree I was charged 50 bucks duty on the other.
We cross at Windsor a lot with no problems but once near Ottawa and once coming out of Prtage mn we had problems with an over zealous bunch of Dudley do rights.
