I have a 4000 Champion I purchased from Kragen Auto Parts about 3 years ago for $250. Its kinda noisy, so if camping with neighbors is your plan, then include in your plan some irritated neighbors. Other than the racket, the generator works/runs very well. I've logged well over 150 hours run time since I've had it and it still works great. Starts right up and is pretty darn good on gas.
I'm thinking I might see if I can fab up a better muffler.

Last time we were camping a fellow had a Champion mounted on the back of his 5'er. Park Ranger checked it at 21' and it was 82 db. You could hear it everywhere in the park -- until the Ranger told him to leave it off or leave the park.

my idea is to get 2 Honda 2000 and run them together if need be. Right now the one just perfect, I don't plan on boondocking much.

It really depends on your useage... We have a 1000 watt unit we purchased at Big Lots for less than $150, used it at Martinsville Speedway a few months back, 1 gallon lasted almost 9 hours at 57db (no problems at any state park with that) it will not run your a/c, but keeps your battery(s) charged and will run the micro, coffee maker and other such things. You need to figure out what you want to use it for before spending over a grand on a unit that you don't need!!! My 2 cents

I second the vote for the Robins Subaru. If you can get one for $1500
that is a fantastic deal. I have mine mountedon the rear and with me at all times. Electric start hour/voltage meter, quiet. Every bit as good as a red or blue and bargain priced!

There is more generator information on here can you can read in days and that many opinions. Figure out how you are going to use it and go to a place where there are several running. It will not take you long to figure it out. I have a Honda 3000 and that is what I did, I need to run my AC a lot and other stuff. Sure it is heavy but always someone to help me load it in the turck. I like the Yammie 2400 but wanted a little more juice and it has paid off. I have run it through two major hurricanes and a minor one. Take it from someone who has a neighbor who has a $600.00 open frame from Home Depot which works great but you cannot hear yourself think for blocks. It also burns more than twice the gas as mine. His wife came out after Hurricane Ike and told me she wanted to shoot it if it were not so hot. Mine is running my RV and you can stand next to it and talk. I am not trying to talk anyone into red or blue just go stand next to any non-invertor genny and judge for yourself. And don't stand there for a couple of minutes, sit down and relax and enjoy the sound, have a beer and talk to the owner.

And if we have another hurricane this year, I am going to buy a Honda 6500 and a 18000btu window A/C and run it, the fridge, tv and lights. Sure they cost a lot, but worth it. I am going to the beach this weekend and some friends rented a Class C motor home. I asked how long the onboard A/C will run on the fuel and he was told 100 hours. It runs on the fuel tank, not sure how big that is. Mine will run at least 8 hours, A/C, tv lights computer coffee pot etc on about 2 gals. If the motorhome has a 40 gal tank that would be about 2.5 gals/hr. Not sure it will make it, told my friend be prepared to go get more gas. I have heard stories about Motorhome gennys being gas hogs, especially the propane ones. Good luck

if your TV is a PU you may want to try a sectional bed cover i built one from OSB for under $50 i leave the gen in the truck bed and remove the section were the gen resides to allow air flow... the only time this failed was my last trip there wasn't room to park my truck next to my TT but in hind site I probably could have ran my extension cord.

Could speculate about what happened there but instead ill just say i've never had a problem with mine no matter if its rangers or more importantly neighbors... I spend on avg 1 weekend a month dry camping for the past year.
I’ll take the guy with the louder generator that uses it responsibly over the guy with the quite generator who uses it irresponsibly any day. The guy that has the quite generator and uses it responsibly goes un-noticed so i haven't met him yet.
