My Wife and I are going to look at a 2002 Fleetwood Ultralite today, private sale. From what I can find this is 3900 lbs dry. If we end up not getting this particular trailer we are looking at HTT's in the 19' - 23' range.

My TV is going to be a 2002 Ford Explorer 8 cyl 4x4 rated for 7300 with the tow package.

From what I gather I am going to need a weight distribution hitch and a Brake Controller like Tekonsha’s Prodigy. Is this correct?

I'm feeling a little bit as if we should be going to the dealer for our first purchase so that they can make sure the TV and everything is set up correctly. What are your opinions on that?

Dealer's are not going to make sure your TV is set up correctly. They are out there to make money and will sell you the highest price/slowest moving RV on the lot. Best bet to take your vehicle to a hitch company and they will make sure your TV is set up properly to tow whatever you get.

Have fun with your search.

Thanks for the advice! What are some hitch companies to look for, I'm in MA. U-haul has them, might not be the best option though?

order your Prodigy BC and the Equal-i-zer WDH from RVWholesalers. the Prodigy will be under $99 and the WDH will cost around $459. that's with free shipping.
a lot of forum members got both of those from RVW.

Check the Hitch Trader and Crages-list, e-bay, etc for a used one and save some money, this is for the hitch. Get a new controller. Just make sure that the hitch you buy is heavy enough to carry the tongue weight of the trailer your going to buy. I've had 3 trailers of different sizes and never bought a new hitch and all served me well. Good chance that if you bought from a private party they may even throw in the hitch. Don't worry about the hitch till you find the trailer.

It's been awhile since I posted. We finally found our trailer, a 2002 Kodiak Skamper K230F. It's dry weight is listed as 3648 and GVWR is listed at 6120.

I believe my explorer will be fine towing this with the 1000/10000 Equal-i-zer and the Prodigy brake controller, but am looking for opinions of explorer owners with a similiar setup.
