It seems that a handful of subscribers here think that the japanese automakers like toyota are outselling the American automakers in the US. However that has never been true. Even more recently, individual automakers like Ford have trounced foreign makes like toyota. No secret that number one continues to be GM...

According the the figures I have, for 2009 YTD, GM has a 19.6% market share; Toyota has 16%; and Ford has 15.5%.
I don't think Ford is trouncing Toyota YTD. Ford has sold 743,497 YTD and Toyota has sold 770,449. GM has sold 943,132 vehicles YTD, still #1. Toyota #2. Ford #3.

Hooray for them. The best selling manufacturer in America and they are bankrupt. That is a little telling about their business practices and what kind of deals they had to do to sell cars. The leaders of GM could screw up being a water salesman in the desert.

Traditionally, with pickups, it has been Chevy/GMC first, Ford second, and Dodge, Toyota and Nissan quite far behind GM and Ford.

Toyota DID trump GM in auto sales in 2008: per reuters.com
What I think is awesome is Ford F-series trucks are the highest sold vehicle in the US overall so far in 2009 (also per Rueters.com). Go Ford!!!

And curiousily enough, in Japan the #1 selling car sold is a Suzuki! 2nd is Daihatsu, 3rd is Honda then Toyota at 4th! So Honda AND Toyota got hammered in their own country by a car (Suzuki)brand that ranks #36th in the USA!
Europe's Best selling car brand is VW, 2nd best selling car is the Ford Fiesta, followed by #3 Ford Ka. Japanese brands are lower on the list.

Yep better to be #2 or #3 and solvent than #1 and bankrupt ... I will never own another Chrysler or GM product and will go Ford or foreign.

Quote: Ford also reported a market share increase from a year ago, despite an 11% decline sales.
Quote: Toyota's sales fell 33%
...
since the Japanese automaker did not shut down production in June and traditionally has a far lower level of fleet sales than the U.S.-based automakers, its decline is more likely linked to weak consumer sales
