I am new to this and don't know where to turn. I am visiting my son later this month in Vernon Hills, Ill and plan on taking my 5th wheel Prowler. How in the world can I find a place to stay there and set up as I will be there for about a week? I found a KOA forty miles away, but that's not gonna work. I need to drop the 5th wheel as I need the truck to help his family move to Evanston. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Took mine thru Chicago 1 time. I would think of dropping it in Evanston and help move from there. JMHO

Try Fish lake Beach in Volo, IL. It's north west of Chiago. Nice older park. They are varily busy so I would call ahead.

there is a nice on out at Fox River, but I think it may be more out of the way than IL Beach St Park.

Fish Lake Beach is probably the closest to Vernon Hills. Chain o' Lakes SP would also work, a little farther away than Fish Lake Beach. If you're arriving on a weekend, you'll need res's; if you can arrive by Wed. afternoon, you can probably find a nonreservable site available at Chain o' Lakes. Not sure how Fish Lake Beach operates - we haven't camped there.
If you go to Chain o' Lakes, try for Fox Den CG; it's not reservable but is newer & the sites have more space. Usually some bigger rigs in there. Sites are electric hookup only; there is a showerhouse and dump station. Stay limit is 14 days in IL SPs. Note alcohol is not allowed in Chain o' Lakes.
IL Beach SP is a good 3rd choice in the area. Similar features to Chain o' Lakes. Some sites are alcohol-allowed, and are usually filled on weekends; others are alcohol-prohibited and often available anytime. They do have some 50-amp sites there, but basically they're an asphalt parking lot. The rest of the sites are more natural. Be prepared for mosquitos! (Same goes for anywhere in Lake County.)
Evanston is a city. I have no idea where you'd "drop" an RV there. We had enough trouble finding parking for an SUV.
Good luck!

Ditto. My mom lives in Evanston....you aren't going to find a place to "drop" it.
