When we had a trailer with a manual awning, we had it out almost all the time when we were in camp. We'd stake it down (in sheltered spots) or roll it up (non-sheltered spots or storm watches) when we were away from camp. Now that we have an electric awning, we only deploy it when we're in camp and it's not raining. Not the way we'd like it, but that's reality with a power awning.

I had a Carefree Eclipse installed so I could leave it out for shade and/or rain. If we are in the woods where it is shady and it is not raining nor in the forecast to rain I leave it in. If we are not in a shady site it stays out, if rain is forecast it stays out. I have it offset and tie it down with rubber bungee chords with no tension on them. It has been through several thunderstorms and very hard rain and wind and one pea size hail storm. I bought it to use and will continue to use it.

Mark me as one who uses his awning I think having it out makes for a more cozy
camp site, besides I park my mobility scooter under it at night.
we did put it away when IKE hit Ohio last year.
One gentelman didn't and his survived, his trailer was blocking the wind.
when I saw him struggling with it I offered to help him roll it up.
But he said he and his wife had both beaten cancer and dreaming about camping
again had kept them going and he wasn't about to roll up his awning.

I can count how many times on one hand and i've had Rvs for 15 years.
Pop-up--one time, too hard to take out and put away(bag awning)
HTT-- three times, once at campground, twice to clean
Class A(used)-- once to check condition

Those people who have their awning out in wooded campgrounds are smart. They realize all the squirrels, birds, and the thousands of bugs up in those tree branches taking a dump on who ever dares to camp below them... We will open ours up every time at least to let it dry out and air out for an hr, then roll it up if we decide we dont need it, OR if we are in a wooded area and our food needs a bit more natural spices added to it.
Don't like the view?? Then change it and Go Camping Our pics
We will miss you Dad (1931-2010). You will forever be in our hearts. Thanks for getting us into camping. Something we love to do so much.
