Anyone been on Route 66? We are interested in going that direction from the Tampa Bay area sometime in the early Fall. We've ordered a series of 3 books on Route 66 including maps. What's it like? Much to see and do? What about RV parks? Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Once you have thumbed through your books you have ordered, you will be hooked. Mike Wallis has a couple of DVD's out about Route 66 that are well worth seeing. We did Route 66 last summer, and if you would like to read about our Route 66 road trip and see some photos, you are welcome to take a look at my Blog at
http://billstraveljournal.blogspot.com/
On the left margin of the blog scroll down till you find the heading ROUTE 66
You will have the time of your life, and you will meet the most interesting people along the way. Every where you stop, you will be welcomed with open arms and great hospitality.
Have a great time.

I lived in Holbrook, AZ in the late 1960s before I-40 went through. That was just after the TV series "Route 66" was filmed and about the time "The Eagles" released "Take It Easy" ("I was standing on a corner in Winslow, AZ..."). It brings back fond memories of days and places that have long past by. I've recently tried to retrace some of Rt 66, but much of it is gone.

We are leaving in a couple of days to drive on The Historic Lincoln Highway, I know it is not Route 66, but considering that it is Lincoln's 200 birthday this year, we thought this would be a good summer to do The Lincoln. I will be adding to my blog starting on Monday as we head out, so if you want to read along, please do. I will be trying to post something each day.

It's not located on the Lincoln Highway but make sure you make the side trip to Springfield, IL for the Lincoln sites. Don't miss his home, his tomb, the Lincoln Presidential Museum, and then make the trip NW of Springfield 15 miles to New Salem State Park where Lincoln grew up. It's a restored village. It's free. Also camping at the park. They're all free except for the Museum. I forget the cost, something like $8 per person but it's well worth it. Plan for at least 1/2 day at the museum and don't miss the 2 shows while there.
Springfield is located on US 66. A lot of Rt 66 sites around town. Some don't misses are the Cozy Dog restaurant which is where the corn dog on a stick was invented by Buzz Waldmire. But don't call it a corn dog, it's a cozy dog. Old Buzz is no longer around but young Buzz still runs the place. A lot of Rt 66 stuff in the restaurant.
Also don't miss the only remaining brick paved portion Rt 66 still in use just south of Springfield and north of Auburn, IL along Rt 4.
Camped in every state but Alaska
