Why are there so many "refurbised" GPS units for sale on the web & in stores.
Why are they refurbised, what goes wrong with them, that they need to be refurbished ?
Any info appreciated.
Thanks

Because they have a hi failure rate,.....if you went by my luck. I have had 2 units go bad under warranty that were probably referbished. And I've had 2 more go bad that I had to pay for. And like an idiot, I still use Garmin.

That's scary to me, I was thinking about buying a new one, but with such a high failure rate ??
I assume as with most everthing if it fails under warraty it would get replaced but that's a hassle in itself ?

also if people buy one or get it as a gift, open it up and decide they don't want it or want a different model and they return it, it cannot be sold as new...
manufacturers take these units back and either use them as spares for warranty replacement or will sell them as refurbished...

As a general rule, electronics will fail either early or late in life. That's why I don't buy extended warranties and why the stores love them. Units are most likely to fail while under the mfr's warranty or after the extended warranty is over.
The units that fail early go back, are repaired, and are sold at a discount. I have a high-end Magellan GPS that I bought refurb'd for $99 + shipping. Works great!

Many GPS units are returned because it is easy to do so. Many people buy and are unhappy with them because they don't perform the way they expect. A lot of it has to do with never learning how they work.

I know there are some good deals on the refurb GPS units.
Maybe one is better off buying a refurb unit, thinking that if hopefully a unit will only have "1" failure it was corrected and it's good to go.

That's one way of thinking of it. Also, there's a huge price advantage. On the downside you may get a 90-day warranty instead of one year. Overall, my luck with refurb's has been very good.

A lot are returned because the owner cannot figure out how to use it so they say it is defective. A large percentage of returned units have nothing wrong.
