Our family has an upcoming vacation in early August from Michigan to Williamsburg, Virginia. I'd really like to avoid the Washington DC area traffic with my new 30' TT, so my question is this- what is US-17 roadway like from Exit 28 on I-66 to I-95 (Fredericksburg, VA)? Is it prone to heavy traffic? Is this a better route to take then going nearer Washington DC traffic on I-66? Please advise- THANK YOU in advance for your assistance!

US17 is a four lane road between I66 and I95. Mostly rolling hills, traffic can be a bit busy near I95 and Fredricksburg. It's a good route around DC. I'd advise staying away from I495, major road construction project in Virginia on I495 and also I95 between Lorton and Springfield.

That's coming right through our neighborhood. Rt 17 south of I-66 is nice rolling hills. Just ran that stretch to Fredricksburg last Saturday morning..no problems. Watch south of Warrenton, at Opal, VA rt17 makes a left and rt 29 stays straight ahead. There is a Sheetz on the corner with a big lot if you need a pit stop. Depending on the day and time (rush hours) getting to 95 on the south end can back up a little. As someone said in your other post...avoid Rt 17 north of I-66 due to low speed limits and speed traps. Stay on I-81 south to exit 300 then I-66 east.

dont fear the traffic i just drove through the heart of Los Angeles and San Diego (4 high traffic legs) with my rig and i have to be honest it was less stressfull than making the drive without hauling, why... maybe because i knew i wasn't going to get any were fast. or maybe because happyness lies in the slow lane not the fast lane.
the only thing that annoyed me initially is the dummy's cutting me off and closing the breaking buffer i was giving my self just to slam their breaks on when traffic came to a standstill (frequently). once i accepted that this was going to happen it really wasn't that bad.

Thats the Only route we use when going to & from central NY, it's only my personal opinion, but there isn't enough money, to force me to go anywhere near DC with my MH, do it very rarely with the car, but don't like it then either.

Lived there 3 years and towed TT many times on 17 between F-Burg and the 66 area. Would highly recommend it! As noted before, 4-lane divided highway pretty much the whole way, and good road too. Most significant problems will be once you get into F-Burg and get close to getting on 95-South, if you come through at a bad time the backup to get on 95S can start several miles before the Interstate. I would try to be through F-Burg and on 95 by 3 pm at the latest - earlier if on a Friday afternoon.

We also use that route to get to I 95 from Western MD so we don't have all the huge hills. Its good and have really had no real traffic problems with it.

We traveled that route from Pennsylvania down to Cape Hatteras for years and years, before we moved to So. California five years ago. It's a nice road to travel. We drove it at least five times a year.

I would stay right on 17 all the way to Saluda then get on 33 to 64.
17 from 301 to Saluda is a great road hardly any traffic at all and 4 lanes the whole way. We go to Williamsburg about 6 times a year and that is the only rout I will take.
