Highway 69 is not a problem with your rig. When you get off of 69 to Cotapaxi (I can't remember the number), the road gets quite curvy, and you will have to take it slow. The road is desolate though.

So its not a very pretty route,,,, we are actually heading to salida from Texas.
Raton pass on I-25 isnt bad. .. but after Walsenburge we just cant seem to find the best route. We took 165 one trip past Bishops castle, usually just go thru Pueblo and east on 50 thru Canon City.
Other route being 285? thru Pagosa Springs , and I hear Wolf Creek pass is Steep going tward Pagosa Springs..

First, going from Walsenburg to Salida via US 160/US 285 doesn't require going over Wolf Creek Pass. Poncha Pass is a breeze. As far as CO 69, the scenic part of this trip is the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on your west side the whole way. You're down in the valley which is composed primarily of very large ranches. There is one large spread specializing in buffalo, so you might see a herd of them along the way. IMHO, CO 69 is as scenic as US 285 up the San Luis Valley. Maybe by desolate, richarfg means uninhabited, as it is a long way between places between Westcliffe and Gardiner. With the rain we've had, it should be a green trip this year.

Compared to your trip on CO 165, either of these routes are a breeze.

I just took that route last week. I was attending a Moto Guzzi (motorcycle) Rally in Salina. I took a 28 ft 5th wheel Toy Hauler. Not a problem on that road. A little bumpy in spots. Think it saved some time from taking 50 & going thru Canon City.
