Sam,
You may be right. We were out all around the Grand canyon area several months back and we still had no problem. I guess the highest altitude we have been at is around 7000' but some of the inclines were pretty steep and we had no problem. We tend to travel the back roads more than the interstates and those roads do not have to meet the same federal standards for rate of climb, etc.

The salesman is out-right lying to you----anything he says about warranty or "extras" get in writing.

I get 6.5 mpg moving a 20,000 lb MH and towing a 5000 lb toad.

Engine noise wasn't bad originally and has gotten very comfortable with $150 of sound insulation I added to the dog house.

Come to think of it, ask the salesman to put the mpg in writing with you having the option to return the MH if it doesn't get 10 mpg. Watch him squirm.

7.7 was what we just with our 454 on the last trip. 6-8 should be expected in typical enviroments for most any class A.

30' Allegro, 2 slides pulling a Jeep Cherokee and get about 6.5 mpg. It dosn't make much difference without the toad, still close to 6.5 mpg, go figure.

We put 22,000 miles total on our recently sold Class A 38' Damon front gas garage coach. Never towed, but always carried a sidecar rig or small car in the garage. Usually long trips with plenty of "stuff" on board.

The Workhorse/ Vortec gave us a total average over this span of exactly 8.2 MPG. I was PLEASED with this mileage and tended to drive at around 60 MPH most of the time. The coach will use more fuel on steep grades obviously, but they also get a good gravity ride on the way back down....

Headwinds effect some coaches more than others as well as the size of roof equipment and such. The weight and drag of a towed vehicle definitely effect fuel " economy " especially on the smaller coaches. If ya drive a huge tag-axle DP it will often get about the same mileage as a smaller gas coach even though it weighs about twice as much. Torque is king.

We never had any problems at all with engine power even in the rockies and such. It engine will need to have a gear it likes and will make some noise but it will work just peachy. Nothing wrong with a gas coach.

We have travled 4,496 miles in the past 2 mo. and burned 704 gal of gas. We have a 36 ft. Holiday Rambler, 460 Ford, Fuel Injected, 4 speed trans. w/overdrive. We have driven through the mountains, deserts, and plains. Headwinds create the lowest mpg (sometimes 5 ) and tailwinds give the best mpg (sometimes 7 ). We pull a Miata as toad.

Down a real steep grade and 50 mph tailwind maybe, the rest of the time, somewhere's between 7 and 8.5. Depending on rig, conditions and driving habits.

Our '98 Santara 35' double slide, 460 got 5.5 to almost 7. Not much difference in mileage after the Banks kit was installed, but it was FAR more enjoyable to drive. Less noise and heat in the front.

1977 Dodge Pace Arrow, 27 foot Class A, 440 CID carburetted, 5 to 8 MPG not towing, 5 to 6 when towing a Datsun pickup. Traded it in on:
1988 GM based Suncrest 32 foot Class A, 454 CID carburetted, about 6 MPG not towing, no hitch so never towed with it.
I have kept track of the fuel used in the Tioga, but I haven't bothered to compute the MPG. At current fuel prices, it uses about $100 worth of fuel in 240-250 miles, that's all I need to know!
