Can they work in motion or must you be stopped?

If you're asking about a Verizon aircard then the answer is yes, as long as you have a cell signal you can connect whether moving or stopped.

Your signal may drop out when using in motion. The towers don't give a good overlap. Coming west from Spokane, there is definite holes in the system.
You can try using it but be prepared for loss of signal.

If you stay close to interstates, there are more cell towers and you shouldn't have a problem. If you move into the countryside, the signal usually diminishes and being inside a metal shell doesn't help. As long as you have the proper signal, it'll work, though.

One of the big advantages of AirCards over a Datastorm dish is that the AirCards work anywhere you can pick up a cell tower signal and that includes while in motion traveling down the hi-way.

Depending on which aircard you've got, you may be able to use an 'external' antenna with it to boost the range a bit. Even just having it up high inside near a big window may help, or inside a fiberglass part of your RV's body. I've had mine for quite a while, but I think it was made by Wilson. There's a separate adapter to attach it to your specific aircard, if it has an antenna port. Try http://www.alternativewireless.com/cellular-antennas/index.html .

We do it all the time.
I'm using a Cradlepoint MBR1000, Verizon USB727 with external antenna port, Wilson Omni RV Antenna with Spring Base and Wilson Cellular 40dB In-Vehicle Wireless Dual-Band 800MHz/1900MH - 801201.
It's great to be able to surf the net, check email and such. But what is really nice is the Micro AT computer that is running our GPS software, which has a wireless connection to the Cradlepont, is also hooked to our 32 in LCD TV in the overhead in the front of the mh. So my wife can navigate and surf the net while sitting in her chair up front while traveling down the road.
I'm able to achieve down load speeds of over 2.5mbs with this setup and have my own WiFi mobile hot spot.
